Anyone know why 5th gen iPod nano’s are so expensive? I was checking then on e-bay and the asking price is $280 for new in box 16GB ones. They were $149(8gig)-179(16gig) when in production from Apple. What the hell? Why so much more expensive?

Collectors items?
Not sure which one the 5th gen is, but a good place to check is the Apple store refurbs:

You think that is bad, try to find a copy of Smokey Yunick's book:
$1000 dollars new, really!!!???
I don't understand the high prices of Apple products in general. Is there a reason you have to have an iPod?
There's a difference between what people are asking and what people are paying! The same thing happened to my Locost book when it went out of print. I doubt anyone ever paid $200 for a copy, but that's what people were listing them for on Amazon.
What Keith said - I sold my last few copies of Buddy Fey's Data Power for some serious coin!
No idea on the ipod, though.

But I don't see an option to pay another price under the used book listings. It's not like eBay, they list a price you have to pay if you want it.
BTW - there is a USED Smokey Yunick book listed for $1400!!!!!!

That's what we'll probably do, but tihs is to replace my eldest's existing 4th gen (tip, iPod's don't wash well). she hates touch screens, hence she has a crakberry ont an iPhone.

At work where I have an IT help line at the other end of the phone non apple products are fine although my current work PC has been unable to read any wifi signal for the past week), but when it's my $$'s on the line I'm sticking with apple as a)things just work and b) on the rare occasions they don't I can talk to real people and get them fixed right now.
I do not want to see another Apple vs. Windows thread. Especially since that isn't what OP was asking about.

Guess it's hit or miss. I had the hard drive replaced 4 times when I had an iPod, and I've never had a problem with either of my PCs. I do wish you luck finding one for a less ridiculous price though.

The option is: don't buy it. Find it somewhere else or (in the case of my book) get it through Google Books. Same with the iPod. Either find one somewhere else - the Apple store was a good tip, and there's always the Craigslist option - or do something else. For example, the iPod Classic still uses a click wheel. It's a bit bigger than the old Nano, but it's harder to leave in your pockets and run through the wash
The click wheels are a lot easier to deal with when you're in the car. You don't need to look at the iPod to flip to the next track or hit pause.
Here's a suggestion for you. Take it in to an Apple store and ask them what they can do. They might be able to offer a low-price replacement. My wife's fairly old iPod (pre-video) developed a click wheel problem earlier this year, and they didn't have any of that age available. So they replaced it with the closest thing they had, which was a Classic that is either the current generation or the one just before. Apple keeps these guys on hand for this sort of thing.
And if you're going in to an Apple store at this time of year, go online and make an appointment at the Genius Bar ahead of time. SO much easier.

I have a Smokey Yunick book at home. I had no idea I could sell it and buy a couple more project cars.
Because they're apples is my guess.
Two other options: http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B001EQ0HAW/ref=sr_1_1_olp?ie=UTF8&qid=1324062873&sr=8-1&condition=used
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_0_15?url=search-alias%3Delectronics&field-keywords=sony+walkman+16+gb&sprefix=Sony+Walkman+16
Own both and both are fantastic.

That is an awesome idea, thanks, we may well do this, unless Santa decides it's lump of coal time this year.

No kidding!
Ade, if she's not picky, I have an 8 gig Nano that's been gathering dust for 5 months. Dunno what generation it is, but does it really matter? It'll be cheap, email me if you're interested.
In my house right now there is the iMac I am typing this on, am iPad, two iPhones, and I'd guess about 5 or 6 various iPods. How anyone knows or even cares what generation their iPod is is beyond me.
Jeez--I got my wife a nano last Crhistmas and it's sat unused in the box. If its'a 5th gen, I think it'll be headed to ebay and I'll just buy her a current one.
Granted, I just bought her a speaker dock setup for Christmas so she'd start using her ipod...
