I may be looking for a part time job in the next month or two and was wondering what these companies are like to work for.
What type of benefit package is available for part timers (I see they offer something, but no specifics)?
What pay rates do they usually start at?
Thanks.
I worked for both.. Out of the 6 differnt jobs and companies I worked for, the only one I hated and just got sick going to was working for lowes. Only made it a year.. and now from what I was told with all the lay offs and so on its even worse. I worked for Home depot for 12 years and loved it. Dont think the part time benefits are as good as when i was there, but believe they still have health care and I know vacation time ect.. The best part and why I stayed so long was the stock purchase plan and also the 401k. No idea what pay is, again it use to be a lot better.. but would think since home depot is doing so much better than lowes they maybe paying more? but not sure.
HD for five years, left there a couple ago.
When I started it was before the ACA, and then the ACA came into play. Before ACA they gave P/T workers the option of health and dental insurance and it was very cheap, after that wasnt an option. Bummer.
But even as a P/T employee you earn vacation time and stock purchase options
You'll get bonuses, I forget what they're called, but it's based on how well the store does and how little theft it has etc. And how long youve been there, Full v Part time etc. But, hey, extra money!
Seriously, it's a great place to work. I only left because I was done with college and had been teaching for several years aleady and wanted my weekends back for me. I would go back.
Several years ago my sister-in-law worked for Lowes. At that time they treated their employees well. While she was working for them a tornado destroyed the Lowes where she worked (in Sanford NC). Management provided employment and company provided transportation to jobs with Lowes in Pittsboro and Fayetteville until they could rebuild/reopen the Sanford store.
I worked at both and was paid well over minimum wage but this was 15 years ago not sure what that translates to, but you can walk into the stores and tell how the working conditions are. There training is well documented and boring, but better then most employers that I have worked. If their is opportunity to learn in different dept. do it, because you can just earn more hours. The negative just like any job bad management, a couple times they scheduled me for a 2 hour shift, wasn't happy about it. I tried to take a 3 day vacation and they scheduled me and wouldn't take me off so I quite. Some of the employees when I worked actually knew of the trade either being a former skill trade or working at one of the old department stores where you needed a skill set. All we did was stock the shelves and point people to the right direction.
You 'pointed' customers at HD? i worked at HD through the 90's. Started out full time in inside garden, went to night pack out crew as department head and came back to day light as the Department head for garden. We were doing 28 million a year in our dept.
I liked it a lot but management started to really suck at out location and continued to get worse so I left after getting my 10 years in. I was there when Bernie and Arthur would come and visit the stores ( ATL). We had a great time there. I still shop there but it has gone down hill - in my estimation - ever since Nardelli was at the controls.
It can be a good place for part time work but it really depends on the store location and management. Just like every place else.
I worked for both 20+ years ago in the paint department. I mixed paint right as the "matching" computers were becoming a thing. I can't tell you how many times people would get upset that the color didn't match, or look different once they painted an entire room that color. It was part time but Lowe's was a pain about scheduling me when I couldn't work due to classes. It helped pay for extra beer and pizza money. I also learned how to drive a fork lift fairly well.
I left to work at a golf course that paid more, had less work, and there was a hitting station set up for when there was down time. My swing was pretty good back then.
In reply to octavious :
I would not have worked in paint for love nor money. I would have been the Oops paint king! Good score on the golf course gig.
