one was trying the stoplight grand prix with me. Lots of revving a little tire squeak and then kinda nothing. I had the a/c on in the 528 and just did a little more than normal acceleration and paced the guy with his foot to the floor. My car is no rocketship. Are the twins that slow? I do like the looks though.

"Underpowered" is the common complaint. Never driven one, myself.
There is a better than excellent chance the fellow in the BRZ / FR-S next to you had less than Mario Andretti skill levels.
The twins get to 60 in the mid 6 seconds and through the 1/4 mile in the high 14s IIRC. Not super fast--- but certainly not slow.
In reply to Joe Gearin:
I hate to break it but in the days of 270ish horsepower Camry's that run low 14's it really kinda is.
If we're using the term "slow" as a relative measure, then yes.
Otherwise, no. They aren't slow. Within a half-second or less of an S2000, which doesn't seem to get thread after thread after thread about how slow it is all over the entire internet.
How dare you defend an inexpensive sports coupe with a manual transmission and nice handling that can't beat a Corvette in a stoplight drag race! How dare you!

They feel slower than they are. Apparently a tune fixes that, I'm eager to try one with a tune done.
In any case, the fiance said it looks like a dueschers car, so I probably will go the BMW route instead. Somehow that passes her qualifications. Don't ask me.

Compared to stuff you can get new? Yeah.
Compared to stuff y'all beat on around here? Well, also yeah for a lot of you....
I think I screwed up my thought there.
Ummm can't you get one with an automatic? I'm pretty sure that would make it slow.
Not to mention 20% of the people I've met that drive a manual transmission actually suck at it. Thus making whatever they are driving slow.
I'd wager that the average frs/brz driver is much more than half a second slower than the average s2000 driver these days. Most of the S2k's I see anymore tend to be lightly but specifically modified (as in, they had a very specific thing in mind when they started purchasing parts) and driven by people in their late 20's/early 30's.
S2K gets to 60 in the mid 5's last I checked.
I drove one last week, and they do feel slow, but I got out of a car that was quite a bit faster. I should also mention that I drove my brother's '85 MR2 recently and it also felt like a total slug. I used to own it and didn't think so then, so its all perspective. Today's cars are so much faster than they were even a few years ago. The BRZ I drove actually wasn't all that slow, but it gave no sensation and the engine note didn't deliver the excitement that would lead you to believe it was faster. It was a fun car to drive however.
When I was a teenager, my dream car was to do 0-60 in 10 secs. And be able to reach 120 mph.
Now I have one.

Because of it's appearance, chassis, and price, I would expect the BRZ to be faster than it is. It looks faster than it is. Another 40 whp would do it.

I like slow, great handling cars and a Frisbee is faster than anything I've owned; I'd love to have one.
I also don't give a berkeleying flip about stop-light drag races or if some other driver thinks his unit is bigger because of his car.

I took one for a drive once. power-wise it kinda felt like my RX-8 but without the last couple thousand rpm where the RX-8 gets a little boost. I wouldn't say it's slow, but I wouldn't say fast either.
Put some good tires on it, then go as fast as your skills will allow you to go around VIR with it, then report back if it is slow and unexciting or not.
I must be the only person I know who doesn't think they feel slow. I love how they feel. They need to work a bit to build speed, but I like that feeling in a car. They are genuinely enjoyable at street speeds. I still want one.

Mine feels plenty fast enough for anything that I want it to do. If I wanted to drag race, I would have certainly bought a different car.
Personally, I find the car geared wrong for me, I like to shift around 5,000 and the two-three shift is too close since cruise speed on surface streets is 3000rpm. I have developed a very lazy 1-2-4 shift habit. What the car needs is about 40 more torques and a gear ratio drop by about half a number. As is, car would have been better with a 5 speed.

No arguement here, they feel great and if I had one I'd drive the wheels off it with a smile on my face, but I still wouldn't call them fast. Same for the NC miata I had the pleasure of driving for a couple weeks this summer. That car ranks right up there on the 'hella fun' chart, but my parents have a minivan that could smoke it in a drag race.
I also agree on the awesomeness of havin to work to build the speed. That's my #1 favorite thing about the miata, too. I can wail on the thing, go flying around a corner and floor it for a considerable amount of time and wind up going the speed limit.
Fast? No.
Fun? Hell's Yea!!!!
And I do own one.
I own one. It reminds me of a slower RX8. I do get around 28mpg with it, though.
It looks the part and is fun to drive, but will get wasted in a straight line by most minivans. It is definitely faster than an old 528i, though.
Fiesta ST 0-60 = 7.0 seconds
BRZ 0-60 = 7.5 seconds
(OK, that is with the automatic...but I have to be faster than SOMETHING)
