If I wanted to find out when a certain attorney was disbarred (probably happened in the early 1990's) in South Carolina, how would I find out? All I have is his name and an approximate year the action took place.

I don't Know if the bar association is a private organization or a public branch. I'm a registered engineer and all our board actions fall under open record laws.
In MO, the bar association posts all of the attorney suspensions/censures/disbarments on their website. If SC doesn't do that, you might call the bar association and ask. Bar associations are generally public organizations and it's just good policy to advertise the guys who have screwed up, what they screwed up, and when they did it for the good of the public.
Wait.... So there are lawyers that are so sleazy that their very own sleazy lawyer organization actually kicks them out? It boggles the mind!

Yes. I was in a band with a guy who would argue the prosecutorial side of disbarment proceedings. The stories he had were incredible.
There was one disbarment in my circle of acquaintances which went thusly: a church was sold in a closing at 11 AM. At 1 PM same day, another closing with the same property. At 3 PM same day, another closing.
Closing 1 sold the church to a holding company.
Closing 2 sold the church to ANOTHER holding company.
Closing 3 sold the church to a congregation.
Closing 2's holding company belonged to the closing attorney.
Difference in price between Closing 2 and Closing 3? $125,000.00.
It came to light about six months later when the two pastors had a chance meeting and compared notes. It wasn't strictly illegal but was immoral, the guy was already on 'probation' or whatever they call it.
