It was good luck they found it as quickly as they did, and they believe it wasn't touched.
One thing I hadn't thought about was along the lines of getting stuck in a car tire, or someone picking it up, was simply some animal eating it, then transporting it into the bush someplace. It could've very easily been lost forever.

They would have found it with detection equipment, just as easily as person could see a flashlight in a dark field.

Not necessarily. In order to find it along the road they drove and walked with highly sensitive Geiger Counters.
If it were miles from any road, detecting it would have been far more difficult. I don't think you can do that time of thing from the air, although I'm sure low flying UAVs would help.
