Shorter beard.  Mine is super thick in a couple of spots.  When I shaved it off after a couple of years, I also shaved a layer of skin off every day for over a week.  Many years later,  Van Duke trimmed at stop 2 on the trimmer, no problem.

Conditioner, and lots of it.

I use a beard specific shampoo. I've been using a beard conditioner for years to keep it from going all civil war on me (it's almost down to my belly button so it can get pretty wild). Although I've found the conditioner tends to worsen the "dandruff". I've been considering switching to a beard oil but don't know if that'll have the same control to hold the hair down.
