GM did a putty color in the 90s/00s. Some of the FWD impalas and Luminas got it. Its so boring that even Rush Limbaugh thinks its kosher.
Early 90s Luminas had a nude/beige color that was kinda yellowy and was about as exciting as watching The Jonas Brothers and Miley Cyrus in concert with special guest, Barney.
But I think the all-time best sleeper color was the 80's GM light blue. Like this:
I don't care how hot the chick is you're with in the back seat, try maintaining wood surrounded by this color

When did you own that Pontiac Astre????
I was in shop class in Steveston High in 1995 and we inherited that very car (minus all the goodies)
I remember the rear suspension on that thing and from what you described, it sounds like the same car. Red oxide and everything.

I think your missing it here, as is most others.
If you wanna have it look like a beater, don't look for what paint, or what treatment will best replicate that. Beaters are beaters because they are left alone.
Just don't wash the damn thing and leave exterior as is, and never think about how it looks again.
Added benefit of being cheapest approach too :D
Heh...
That is how most of my cars end up. Not on purpose but I'm just more interested in running condition than appearance.

Plain white. I swear on a stack of bibles Cops can't see a white car.
this might be true. My '70 'stang was white and was definitly not a sleeper, it even had loud exhaust, loud enough to set off car alarms after the muflers were a bit old. I got away with all kinds of sillyness in that car. It drew a lot of attention from people on the street too, but I never once was bothered by the cops.
back on topic: best sleeper disguise, unwashed light color factory paint, quiet exhaust, and R compound tires on slightly rusty steelies.
Saturn Blackberry, with a nice assortment of chips and gouges.

That was the same car. Your student teacher at the time is a friend of mine (he teaches apprenticeship at BCIT now). The rear suspension, while simple and home-made, was VERY effective. I drove it to Steveston High and pulled the drivetrain one evening. You guys got the rest. Did you see where the left lower trailing arm ripped out of the floor? Nasty. I have a picture of it all cut up in the compound..... I was offered the Mechanics job there in about '98 or so (whenever your guy left), but turned it down because I was hell-bent on getting out of Vancouver.
Off topic, sorry.....

Dirty white or sun-faded turquoise!
I've always been a fan of really beat-up sleepers. Who would put money into a car when it's not worth it to fix it up cosmetically? Give your friends a medicine ball and chuck it at the car a few times A few hits with a baseball bat would also work pretty well.
