The best hand cleaners are things you probably shouldn't soak your hands in. Like gasoline, or the various hydrocarbon based fluids they use in parts washers.

However, going to a trade show with ground in grease/paint/dirt/etc. on my hands doesn't look so great. The best stuff I have found is Kresto, but it still doesn't get everything out, even with a stiff scrub brush. So what is the best stuff to get ground in grit off of your hands? Even Acetone didn't get anything out (It did take off Herculiner that wasn't dry yet). This is what I'm talking about (it looks worse than the picture). IMAG0127

If the trade show you are talking about is SEMA--- -don't sweat it, plenty of other folks will have non-manicured hands there too. (myself included)

I can vouch for this, too. It's not as convenient and makes your hands smell like coffee, but it works really well.

Stiff nail brush and dawn. And wear nitrile gloves you Bob Costas

Nothing is as cost effective, and it doesn't tear up your hands. And it gets under the nails too being that it's... a nail brush!

I discovered long ago that charcoal lighter, mixed with Tide into a paste works very well, but rough on your skin. Probably mix that with coffee grounds for some grit.

Pro Soap , it's extremely effective, doesn't dry your skin and doesn't leave some nasty rest-stop smell on your hands. I've been happily using it for 8 years.

Man, if Kresto can't get it off it's some serious E36M3.

This stuff is amazing, but not cheap. And fun fact: It's made by the same people who brought us the Mosler automobile.

Another fun fact: I once flooded my garage during a misguided attempt to prepare for a hurricane (that I ended up evacuating, hence why my "fill the laundry tub with drinking water" good impulse turned into a miserable "make a wave come out of the garage when you return and open the door days later" mistake). What comes floating out on top of the wave, completely unaffected by its days at sea? Yep, my bar of Cra-Z Soap. Stuff lasts, like, crazy long.

QFT. That said, the best man hand soap I've used was some hand made "machinist's soap" It's a bar with a very fine grit of some kind in it, and there is a trace amount of kerosene in it. It gets everything off the skin, and a brush loaded up with it takes care of the nails. My wife bought it for me, and can't recall where she got it. I haven't been able to track it down.

I do know the the label is wood block printed, and attached with a screw.
