Swmbo and I are sick of Winter. Where should we move to? We're going to check out asheville NC in a couple weeks, where else should we check out? Must have good roads within short drive, chill, happy vibe, decent economy.

I love North Ga, but you have to make your own economy. Check out the Brevard area while you're in Ashevile. Just a hop skip & jump down the road.
How much is "little" for snow? We get little here (NW AR), compared to further north, and "ZOMG, SNOW" compared to, say, Brownsville, TX.
And Arkansas if friggin' gorgeous. I'm sure it will be "discovered" and trampled in the near future.
I do agree that Ashville and vicinity has a lot to offer.
Op, a lot is dependent on your income source. Are you retired, do you need to locate according to your job, etc.?
Subscribed. I'm in the same boat but will start my own thread. My siblings may determine my location, though.
Come on up to Portland. We have hardly any snow, lots of green trees, lush gardens, great moutain roads, the beach is two hours away, the snowy mountains are two hours the other way and we also have rain and gloom 8 months out of the year.
If you have marketable skills, then the economy is not bad.
Several great race tracks in the area to choose from and active autocross and rack day scene, plus Cali is close enough to visit their race tracks and stuff without having to live there.
What else....no sales tax. You can't pump your own gas, cars don't really rust though and emissions testing isn't bad and there are more than a few older cars used as DD's. Oh and did I mention the rain? Yeah, it rains a lot.
Oh! BEER! I forgot the card brews, winery's and distillery's in the area.
So when ya moving?
This past winter was one of the (certainly not the only) reason we decided to leave PA. We just moved to the Atlanta area less than two weeks ago. I'm very happy to almost never have to shovel or deal with snow again. Cost of living here is drastically less than PA. I'm about 40 miles outside of the city, so it's the 'burbs, and so far we really like it. Very beautiful, lots of things to do.
Ignore all of the lists and don't come to Texas. It's too full already in the cities :)
Seriously though what do you like? Sounds like you would love the pac NW from the little bit you wrote. I'd be there over Texas if my wife was not so allergic to pine trees.
Hotlanta!.. I'm in Marietta... Close to everything. When 6th grader graduates high school, I might look at Greenville/Asheville area.. Centrally located and pretty hip. I need a house with a little more space for a shop.

I had a business trip in NC a year ago in spring and the pollen was all over. I got slapped with a sinus or allergy infection and spent 2 days in my crappy Holiday Inn room.
Also the south ('Bama) has snakes......

Good. We have enough berkeleying Harley's here
Seriously after visiting Alpharetta and Atlanta I can't imagine living there with the oppressive humidity and insane traffic. Gimme the PacNW or a nice Pacific island, thanks.
That's not to say that Hotlanta and the area isn't a great place to shop for cheap, rust free projects, but that's another matter altogether.
oh... more reasons to look @ Portland... aka PDX... brews... coffee and suds... across the river (Washington) pot is legal... if that is your thing.

Or the southwest at 4,000 ft. if you want the dry and a good bit cooler. Nice driving up there and four seasons without the extremes.
I have been looking to transfer to the Winston-Salem area of NC. Doing research online. Mostly because I am tired of the oppressive heat 8 months at a time.
Charleston SC SUCKS. You really don't want to move here.
No really, we have enough Yankees already and don't want any more.
I like mountains, so I've been eyeing places like Chattanooga, Asheville, Brevard, although they do get some snow and slop which limits mountain biking around the winter months.
I also really like New Mexico, Utah, Boise, Arizona and Nevada.
My family is small, outside of my parents I've only got maybe 6 relatives in the area. Not sure if I should stay on the east coast until my grandparents are gone or not.
Asheville …. we do get snow here … nothing like what you're accustomed to, but snow none-the-less
last yr. only one "real" snow … 8 - 12" …. stuck around about 5 days
the 2 yrs prior … = 0 inches
the 2 yrs prior to that = 3 - 4 snows, each totaling ~ 14" each
plus you'll find that anywhere down here, ANY snow at all …even if just blowing around and not sticking, totally shuts down the entire area …. counties aren't equipped to deal with it, and the locals have ZERO idea how to drive on it
Living here, I will certainly give a big "oh hell no" to Atlanta.
Chattanooga is pretty awesome. North Alabama is beautiful.

This, but we do have all 4 seasons. I came to Asheville in 1993 to go to college and never left. Not sure what you do, but the job market isn't terrific and home prices are some of the highest in the state. The biggest employers are the hospital and public school system (with low end teacher pay). We have some of the best roads in the southeast and it's not too far of a drive to get on a track. We also have some excellent local beer and great restaurants. Basically a great place to visit or become your own employer.
