Halibrand Shrike Indy car.

This appears to be the same car 'back when'.

Driver was a guy named Eddie Sachs.

I'm actually interested in a few of the Mini's if anyone is going and can look at them for me. Viewing on Thurs is free. They'll probably sell for more than I want to spend... and if they don't have titles, that could be a problem as well... Not sure I want to deal with that.

edit. Looks like NONE of the cars have titles. Even the more modern ones like the trio of Passat TDI wagons. WTF is up with that? They don't have titles in NH? If the TDI's are in half-decent runnign condition they're worth a fair amount, but title issues could cut the values by a lot.

Holy crap, I'd love to get another (this time non rusty) 323GTX and add a GTR drivetrain. Good job it's too far from here.

That could be a great time to buy one for an engine swap. I imagine they will go cheap without a title. Anyone know if that sports car kit using the tdi engine is for sale yet?

I want the crazy looking VW diesel camper....well and most everything else in the auction too.

The kit is just about ready for mainstream release (most info posted on Facebook, but they are preparing a normal website). However, the kit uses the Jetta MkIV as the donor, not the Passat B4. Plus, I believe the kit still retains the original VW VIN registration - or tries to - as the kit essentially takes all the VW bits and just moves them around while retaining the VW dash (VIN) and ECU.

Interesting... According to the NH DMV, any vehicle over 15 years old doesn't have a title. Now that doesn't mean some these cars are legally able to be registered (or own in some cases), but it can certainly make a few things easier.

According to the NHTSA (pdf) rules on VIN's, you can't "transfer" a VIN to a different type of vehicle, even in a single-donor situation. The only exception to this rule is an exact replica reproduction (like rebuilding a burnt-out Ferrari 250 into a Ferrari 250) or an official rebody (taking all of the original parts and putting them into just a different chassis, most states will issue a "Rebodied" or "Rebuilt" branded title to go along with it). I'd be very cautious if that's what the kit company is telling people. These guys give a how-to on a state-by-state basis of titling a new kit car. All of the random ones I clicked on involved new VIN's issued by the state.

The whole titling and VIN thing has me weary about the kit. Just more B.S. than I'd like to deal with on top of building the car itself. Questions about it have gotten vague answers... probably because it varies so much between states on top of DOT rules.

Plus, that car is one of those things I like to day-dream about but would never actually want. I can think of about a million other projects I'd rather do first. It just has too many compromises with regards to being a useful day-to-day car, which would be the only reason to own one.

what I don't understand is how someone with such good taste for some of the truly unique and rare cars he's acquired, also has so much stuff that's just junk. Alot of this should've been crusher fodder years ago: rusty chevy trucks, 12+ year old Subaru's, '90's VW's, etc. Why would someone of his skill/travels and wealth even bother with having these to begin with?

examples:

In reply to Curmudgeon:

My google fu turned up that there were 10-12 Shrikes built. Seems unlikely that this example is Sachs' car, as this was it's fate:

"The only '64 Halibrand Shrike that made the starting field at Indianapolis was that of Eddie Sachs, running for DVS, Inc, (George Deebs, Bob Voight and Dick Sommers.) The likeable 'Clown Prince' of Indy was involved in one of the most violent accidents in racing history when Dave MacDonald spun his #83 Mickey Thompson-designed 'rollerskate' exiting turn four at the end of the first lap. MacDonald's burning machine came back onto the track in front of Sachs, who could do nothing to avoid hitting the car at full-speed. Sachs and MacDonald died in the wreck, which there has been much discussion about to this very day. "

That's Sachs about to T-bone MacDonald.

That is an INSANELY cool collection of cars. He has really good taste. Certainly wouldn't expect that stuff to be in NH.

The Urracco is a basket case that I could never see making sense to restore. So much other fascinating, oddball stuff, though.
