Looking at picking up a bigger set to replace our about 8 year old 55" Samsung with a 70" or 75".  What is the biggest difference from the Crystal UHD, and QLED?  Is the extra couple hundred bucks worth it?  We have some Costco cash to burn so this seems like a decent choice....well to me anyway.

I have found this site to be very helpful when trying to choose the right TV. And I suck at this kind of thing.

Can I use a  big screen TV as a Desktop monitor ?

and say its 55 inch , can I only use part of it , say the size of a 32 inch monitor ?

I  would be using the 32 inch part for google searches , forums etc , and full screen for movies  ,

Would it be easy to change back and forth ?

Thanks for the info

I bought a LG 55" QLED to replace a failed Panasonic plasma after looking at all competitors at Costco.  Six months in, I still am blown away by the picture quality.  And I have gotten hooked on the LG smart remote and how intuitive it is to use.

Aren't the Samsung smart TV's the ones that have ads on them? Maybe that is common on them all now but something to be aware of.

Amy reason not to get a better performing TV for hundreds less from Hisense or TCL?

I avoid Samsung tv's, they like to shut off features a couple years into ownership, kinda like Sony, but they won't sue you for turning them back on.

Got a source on that? If you're talking about removing streaming services, it's probably not their call, and you should be using a separate streaming device anyhow.

I've been a fan of Vizio for bang-for-the-buck for many years. We bought their top-of-the-line 65" two Black Fridays ago, and it's spectacular. I just watched John Wick 3 on a 4K blu-ray, and the picture is just stunning.

Yes, the Samsung 3d tv I had in 2011 that they removed YouTube from for no reason at all, right before ending all support for it

I'm in the same boat but looking for the best bang for the buck 55"-65" under $500.

The Q60T is cheaper than I realized, but everywhere I look the best bang for the buck is consistently talking about the TCL (S535) 5 Series, TCL (R635) 6 Series, Hisense H8G, and Hisense H9G. I'm watching to see what those all do in the upcoming sales. I would be surprised if at least one of those doesn't end up dropping their 75" below $1k at some point in the next month or two.

Be aware of black friday things.  As someone who worked in retail acquisitions for a while, they often aren't what you expect.  Many manufacturers of appliances, electronics, tools, and other big ticket things aren't actually making the products you buy on a black friday sale.

All of them (black friday or not) are usually assembled in China, which isn't a bad thing per se, but black friday stuff is when companies like Samsung ship truckloads of parts to a third-party assembler.... read: the lowest bidder.  Sometimes they even source the parts from someone who says they can build them cheaper.  Long story short:  The chances that a black Friday Samsung TV are actually made by Samsung are incredibly slim.

At HD, our black friday stuff isn't even delivered by HD.  It comes directly drop-shipped by a third party and they don't even have the same part numbers.  Ever go into HD or Lowes and see (for instance) a Dewalt table saw with a big red thing printed on it that says "Special Buy?"  That basically means that Dewalt licensed out the use of their name to a lowest-bidder assembler so that they could sell it cheaper.  Different SKU, different bar code, and a part number that has an extra suffix character.

This isn't always a bad thing, but when you compare my TCL TV that I bought at regular price to the same exact TV that my bestie bought on black friday, things are different.  Her part number has an X at the end, several of the smart apps don't work, and the display is not only terrible quality, but it has glitchy artifacts in it.  She can't return it, can't get it serviced, and now she has a cheap useless TV hanging on her wall.  When you look in the vents on the back of her TV, I can see Xiaomei written on a couple elements whereas in mine I see TCL and Toshiba.  Again, not saying it's always a bad thing, but the difference between black friday stuff and the real deal is sometimes like buying a "Rolex" watch from a street vendor.

Sound like reason #873 that "smart" TVs are a dumb idea. TVs should be display devices, period. Fortunately, they can easily be used that way. Vizio can add or remove any streaming apps they want to my TV, I never use them anyhow.

But also, I highly doubt that it's a Samsung-only issue. You're talking about a 9-year old TV. And licensing agreements and such change over time.

I have had the TCL 55" for three years now.  It was the first of their 4K HDR models.  Aside from one of the firmware updates that was glitchy, I have been very happy with it.

Compare the Hisense alongside the TCL and I think you'll find the display quality of the TCL to be better, unless things have changed a lot since I looked a few months ago.  Neither one will be QLED or OLED quality, but more than enough for my needs.

Mine is a smart TV... mostly because it was no more expensive than a dumb one, and it was one less component to deal with.  I have always been a fan of the Roku platform simply because they're not really in bed with anyone.  They have nearly every app.  If you have a fire stick, you're limited to only the apps that get along with Amazon.

Some TCL models are QLED. My GF just bought one (not sure which model).

Most reviews on the 2020 models (that I think just came out a few months ago) actually seem to put the Hisense performance as marginally better than the equivalent TCL, but at a slightly higher price. All four that I listed are not only QLED, but with full array local dimming as well. You might have been looking at either a 4 Series or a 2019 5 Series, which only became QLED for 2020.

TCL runs Roku and Hisense runs Android TV. I would think both should maintain strong future support.

I also agree that one needs to watch product numbers too, and not just for Black Friday.  I seem to recall that some retailers would have their own version of a product made exclusively for them, with different SKU, so that they could cheapen up the build (as you note) to undercut the competition and/or deny it for price-matching against competing retailers/sales.

The Q6DT is the wholesale club version of the Q60T, and I have not seen any info on whether or not there are any real differences other than some of the size offerings.

Yeah, unfortunately you can't really avoid smart TVs these days. And what you say about Roku is mostly true, except they still don't have HBO Max (nor does Fire Stick, for that matter). I still have a couple of Rokus, but I recently got a Sheild TV Pro, and I'm loving it so far. The 4K upscaling is great.

I really don't need the smart tv feature, we use one of the xbox ones as our smart device to stream things and play blu-ray disks.

Interesting sidenote on how TCL got the 4K... They used four 1080p 27" display units soldered together.
