Sturgill Simpson is cutting a bluegrass record of his entire catalog.

https://www.whiskeyriff.com/2020/06/01/sturgill-simpson-is-officially-recording-a-new-bluegrass-record/

“Y’all raised a Scrooge McDuck pile of $$$ to help a lot people in need and I promised you a record this year. So I’m taking a detour from the five album plan to cut my entire back catalog of songs for you guys the way they were written and meant to be played… ruff, rugged, n’ raw. More good news coming soon. In the meantime lets all try to live above hell.”

How long do you want this list to be? This list is basically limited to recent acts, so I'm not listing the John Prine's and Guy Clark's, assuming you've already been exposed to them

  • The Highwomen
  • Brandi Carlile
  • Justin Townes Earle
  • Wade Bowen
  • Jamey Johnson
  • Brent Cobb

Yes on the above list, plus Derek Hoke, Chris Jacobs, Paul Cauthen and Ian Noe. Add in the old school guys who inspired this young bunch - James McMurray, John prince, and for gods sake Ray Wylie Hubbard. I love Jason Isbell but I'm getting fatigued with his preaching songs even though I generally agree with his positions.

I like Sturgill a lot more than I like his music. My favorite stuff of his is the weird album thats the soundtrack to rhe anime thing.

EDIT ; if you like this stuff we have one of the only radio stations air broadcasting this genre. Ive seen half those cats play in little local spots. You can listen to The Creek at soundandsoulonline.com.  I show up on the morning show occasionally

I recently discovered Mr. Simpson. After I watched him play on SNL, I became a fan. A comment on the YouTubes said it best. " I have a feeling Sturgill told the band that we probably ain't ever gonna be invited back to SNL so let's just go out and burn the whole damn place down."

My brothers would agree with you. I haven’t warmed up to him, for some reason.

What songs do you recommend of his that I should give a few listens to?

also, Corb Lund hasn’t been mentioned here either. Definitely deserves a shoutout.

I don't know if they fit the genre perfectly but I can't see bluegrass/Americana with out mentioning the Avett Brothers.

Reckless Kelly, hell yeah!  Also, Steve Earle, Whiskeytown, and my favorites The Old 97's. Also see Alejandro Escovedo, The Blasters (Dave Alvin), The Mavericks, Paul Thorn, The Bottle Rockets, Joe Henry, and The Drive By Truckers.

Ultraclyde, did you mean James McMurtry?

If you're interested in the ladies, try on some Lucinda Williams, Gillian Welch, and Neko Case.

This is great news, I'm excited.

I had never heard of him until I saw him on NPR's Tiny Desk Concert.  Shortly after he played Austin City Limits...I'm a fan.  His first two albums were really, really, really, good.  Roots Country/Outlaw country.  A Sailor's Guide to Earth was his "I've made it and I can make a huge Nashville-style country Album."  More polished and produced than his earlier albums, but still a great piece of music.  His newest album is a further departure from his bluegrass roots.  Not my style, I haven't even listened to it much.  the fact he's going to make these into bluegrass albums is great.

Kacey Muscgraves first 2 albums were also really good.  Cheeky, cute, but honest and fun.  Her latest one is just not my style...too contemporary and pretty far away from where she started.

I'd recommend giving Luke Bell a listen.
