Is there any hope for it?
This was from about 100' but it's off at closer ranges, too.
Find a local Nikon dealer. They can usually refurb them for $70-100. We did this with the 7600 we had that fell off the trunk of the car at 40mph then sat on the side of the road in the rain for 24 hours. Works great after they worked on it.

That's more than the camera in question is worth. Buy a replacement off eBay if you're hooked on having that exact camera. Otherwise, time to upgrade.

$19 + $4 shipping. Working.
Hah, that's hilarious but I'm not surprised. I'm getting back into photography after a long hiatus and want to step it up so will start a "what camera" thread here shortly. Thanks, all.
I was going to say that I have a pile of old cameras in a drawer that are better than that. I'd send one for shipping.
ill make it easy for all of you:

best. camera. ever.
especially for new dads, cause it uploads to facebook in a snap, and you can control the shutter from your smart phone to get family pics that include everyone.

I'll add this as the best camera ever.
Nikon, Coolpix AW120.
Waterproof, shockproof, 16mp, HD video, GPS picture tags, WiFi, remote view and shutter from your phone, the works.
Because having a camera you never used, for fear of getting it wet, dusty, dropped, whatever, SUCKS.
I love this camera and it's never more than 10 feet from me. I take pictures of everything now.
The best camera is the one that you have with you. For me, an iPhone--or whatever smart phone you carry. Seriously, many of the same basics used with a "real" camera apply to a smart phone as well. All of my Instagram photos have been taken with an iPhone 4s.
In many cases, it works well. Where does it fail? Low light. Then you need either a DSLR or a fast point-and-shoot. (I carry a Canon G15 when off-duty.)
I love my Nikon 1. Great picture quality, shoots in very low lights, freezes fast moving things...perfect for taking pics of the kids.
