I see a large amount of body work in my future and it will be a complete learning experience. While I have a nice compressor, it doesn't have a tank large enough to running a sander for long periods. hence the desire for electric.

I could see a palm sander being used on a car or perhaps a variable speed belt sander for rough work on bondo but I've never tried to use one for that.

I'll be needed to remove 70 year old paint and rust.

Get some of these (they are very pumis like):

And one of these:

VERY good at taking off paint and bondo. Easy on metal also. I suspect much better than most air tool options. They also have smaller ones for detail work with drills. Complex surfaces will require wire wheels. I This has been my stripping solution. The only step up I see is a sand blaster (which of course will make much more of a mess)

I use a black and decker palm sander but im far from an expert. Wire wheel on a drill for tight areas and pitted areas.

Get a Dual action with the round pads, not 1/4 sheet jitterbug. Opinion deployed.

i bought the harbor freight DA polisher, the most expensive one they have. then i bought the sanding backer pad with the correct threads, and switch them out. so i have an electric DA sander when i need to sand and polisher when i need to polish.

Can't think of any time I have used the electric random orbit sander that I have.

I use the wire wheel and the rice cakes on the angle grinder to deal with rust and crud. I have an air powered long-board, but find that it gathers dust since I bought a set of Durablocks with the stick-on sandpaper.

Amending my opinion. These are awesome, if pricey. The 3M ones that mount on a drill remove rust and paint well, also. But I think 80 grit on a DA would still be keen. I just bought an air DA for the same purpose because I got tired of the work/expense of the above. I cannot speak as to its effectiveness yet.

They are pricey, but a great thing to buy from HF, about $5.

A good tip when used on a drill is to reverse occasionally, the cut will take a large jump. They can create some heat on an angle grinder, so beware.
