I was looking for a .308 pump, but found so many cheap 30-.06s that I bought one. Same caliber, more powder. Got this 7600 with a Nikon 3-9x today.

My genitals grew by two inches.

Which is one of the reasons I was originally looking for a .308 - military caliber means you can buy a steel army-green box with 1000 shells online for $250.

But I kinda realized that 06 was a mighty fine caliber as well and I wasn't having much luck finding a 7600 .308 that didn't cost way too much.

I do have a .308, but its a 742 and I can't hunt in PA with a semi-auto rifle.

Any reloaders here? I think for reasons of ammo availability and cost, I might start loading my own.

Primer supply is the current weak link in reloading, IIRC

I recently got into reloading, primers were hard to come by, followed by powder and projectiles, but now they seem to be available if you are persistent about looking. If you shoot at a public range, get one of the Caldwell brass catchers. Other shooters will see it and offer to give you their brass, it's great.

I bought an rcbs starter kit that came with the bare minimum needed to get started minus dies, but I'd recommend a better, digital scale, and a powder trickler if you're loading for accuracy, plus the stand to mount your powder measure to the bench separate from the press.

You'll want to look into a tumbler or sonic cleaner plus the appropriate media for it if you're going to reload your fired brass rather than buying new or already prepped brass.

Where are you finding 1000 rds of .308/7.62NATO for $250? Steel case wolf stuff is near double that from my generally not gougy source (sgammo.com). Even new production steel 7.62x54r isn't that cheap, and that's the cheapest high power rifle cartridge out there.

Exactly what I was thinking. If that was true, I'd snatch up an enfield 7.62Nato locally for $250 and get me a couple thousand rounds at that price.

No doubt. Cheapest I've seen brass-cased 7.62 NATO lately is about 60 cents/round. I've never, ever seen it under 40 cents/round.

I've bought 2 upper receivers as well as various other parts and sundries from PSA, good folks in my book. Otherwise NMNA.

I bought 600+ (quit counting after 600, probably around 630 rounds) of surplus, sorted, and checked .223 for roughly $0.35 a round during the latter part of last years shortage, and thought I made out like a bandit. I don't own a .308 but if I could get them for around that price I'd be snatching them up.

Nobody wants a Ishapore 2A at the moment, $250 should get you a nice one.

I didn't get that price... that was ammo that my buddy got in Atlanta. And I'm also not sure it was NATO, it could have been cheap junk ammo that someone put in an ammo box and sold it on ebay.

I do have a buddy with dies for several calibers (but not 30-06).

He started loading because he collects some neat older stuff that ammo is really hard to find. So, theoretically, all I would need is the 30-06 specific stuff and then he can help me out. He lives a few hours away, but it might be worth the trip if I had a couple hundred brass.

A set of dies is dirt cheap. I've been reloading for about 40 years. I've loaded - a few - rounds. Right now, it is difficult to buy components to load for what you can buy steel cased stuff for.

Check sportsmansguide.com for ammo. They have always been good to me. 30-06 is available. The ammo shortage is letting up, except for 22LR, which is still unobtainium.

Some of us still associate '06 with other activities as well ... It's still my standard for comparison for versatile rifle cartridges.

NATO doesn't really mean quality. It's just part of the caliber designation-- ie 7.62 NATO (7.62x51mm), not 7.62 Soviet (7.62x39), 7.62 Tokarev, 7.62x54R, etc.

There's plenty of junk surplus NATO ammo out there.
