Was the shop the legal owner of them? Can the bank claim they stole them?

Me too - $4,000?

hmmm.. way in over his head. Bought a car he could barely afford and put an extra $4000 worth of rims and tyres on it. No wonder he fell behind in his payments

That's one of those ideas that when you hear about it you (or at least I) think it will never work.

Then they make a killing and all I can say is, "Son of a bitch!".

Also in for pics.

Curmudgeon should be in shortly with the story about the set of wheels that got repoed in the dealership service lot.

There is a monster wheel shop in town that rents-to-own wheels. They've got to have a 1000 sets on hand. All of them 20 inch and above.

Just like the business models of furniture rentals like Rent-A-Center or Aaron's, these "wheel leasing" shops operate on the expectation that a certain (large) percentage of the wheels they "lease" will wind up back on their shelves to be "leased" again.

Same goes for those "buy here/pay here" car lots you see in lower-end neighborhoods.

On the other hand, the bank (or whoever holds the car note) has a reasonable expectation that the car, if repossessed, will have wheels on it.

Chances are lousy that the guy has the OE wheels back home, and I would think that the lien holder would have reasonable legal grounds to add the cost of new wheels and tires to whatever back payments the owner owes.

I work at a high end wheel shop. $4000 is not unreasonable for a set of wheels and tires. I've seen a set of HRE wheels with Michelin Super Sports go out the door for over $12k. Our average wheel/tire package is probably in the $4000 range.

Topspeed's One Lap of America car this year had HRE wheels that probably cost $3000 a wheel before tires.

Edit: We don't lease wheels. We won't order them unless we get half the money up front. On the rare occassion a donk pulls in the parking lot, all of the techs try to avoid the ticket.

There is a Rent-a-Wheel place in Daytona between the track and the beach that I laugh at every yr when I am in town for the Rolex. You cant fix stupid but you sure can make a lot of money off of it.

i think a place that rents wheels is a good idea. there is one in Pittsburgh the guy does really well. he has customers that rent wheels and tires for a couple of months and then exchanges for a different set he said he has a couple customers doing it for a years.

Wow, I was 26 before I spent more than $4k on a car. Now at 44 I've still never paid more than $600 for a set of wheels or more than about $800 for a set of tires. Was the $k the sticker price or what he would have ended up paying with interest if he'd been able to keep up payments?

The Bank may have a superior security interest in the wheels, even if added later and financed separately. I doubt the tire shop had a security interest in the tires, either. Bank could probably sue the wheel shop for conversion, but what do I know.

Most auto finance agreements grant a security interest in the car, as well as any attachments or equipment thereon, even if added later, like wheels and stereos. A purchase money security interest could conceivably trump that, but my guess is most wheel shops don't spend much effort properly perfecting those.

Nice wheels anyway!

Here, I found you a very good example of this.......

You might think the donk crowd were the ones going there, but I doubt they'd have the credit to get rentawheels.....

Oh and let me add, just because I don't think it is unreasonable to put a $10k wheel package on a car doesn't mean I think everyone should do it. That to a guy driving a $100k-$120k car is not all that crazy. It's all relative. The most I think I have ever paid for wheels and tires was $600. I drive $300 to $2500 cars though.

Now a retard in a $1500 donk with $8000 worth of wheels and tires is a whole other subject. That is just poor desicion making at best.
