Drove the wife to work, still just heavy rain and moderate wind. A tree was down on one of our access roads out of the neighborhbood, had to divert to the other road out. Otherwise not much happening, I did lose my cable though so all posting through phone for now. Heading down to the beach when I get back home to check it out.
I'm on standby to go out to the east coast and repair cable in our sister systems out there. We're hoping to hear by Monday what's going on.
Hope everyone is safe.
On Firday afternoon, I drove on I-80 from Cleveland to Erie, PA. In that brief trip I came past two truck convoys. Each convoy was about 12-15 trucks long. The first was Electical Workers coming out of Michigan headed east. The other was tree trimmers/removers out of Illinois. It seems that the reinforcements were on thier way east.
Here in CT, we've had a bunch of rain and some pretty decent gusts. We're usually the first to lose power, and by some miracle it's still on. Looks like a good chunk of the state is out already. We did lose DSL and cable...
We have the typical leaves all over the place, and there's a pretty decent stream running through our side yard right now. We've had a bunch of pretty heavy rains over the past few years (including 8" in 24 hours), and this one is up there. According to the forecast, the worst is yet to come.
wind is definately picking up speed now, a little concerned about trees in front of house.
No flooding though, rain has stopped and it's just misty now.
Hope everyone else in Irene's path is fairing well.
i got a text from my bro at 2:28AM Sun 28 Aug stating "power just went out." he lives just outside NE DC.
I drove home around 11 pm through some of the worst of it. Fortunately, I took the truck and being high above the road made the drive easier. Some water in my basement, but not bad. It appears the hard work putting gutters on the g/f's house paid off as there was minimal water in her basement.
Where my apartment is here in Quincy it looks slightly drizzly and pretty windy for a normal day, but thats about it. I'm west of I93, though, and up hill. Also my apartment is surrounded by what appears to be a really tall ridge of dirt, probobly to protect us from looking at the gross quarry or something like that, but it also seems to block wind. I'm feeling pretty happy I moved here! I can see my van and my garage, too, but I can't see my wife's car. It's probobly fine.
I just returned from a walk around the neighborhood. Minimal damage except for a few places along the nearby creek that are flooded. The scary part is I think its low tide right now, which means it may get worse for them. Fortunately for me, I'm another 20 feet or so higher.
I just got a call from my mom outside of Reading Pa. Seems they lost power around midnight and are still without it. Me, I am 15 miles from the Atlantic Ocean and the storm passed right over head... didn't lose power, phone, or cable.
Figure that one out.
Worst we had here was enough rain to put a "tide" line on the bumper of my Ti and a branch the size of my 10yo niece's wrist is down in the side yard
Hardly any branches down around here either. I think the weak ones were taken out by the storms we had a couple of months ago.

We kind of bugged when water started trickling in, but the French drain is doing its job. Then we hear from friends who have ankle deep water pouring in. Which sucks worse since many of them have to go to the basement due to tornado warnings in their vicinity.
Yeah, we just got a little water in the basement, but the floor drain stayed open and it all flowed right back out again. Other than that, we're fine. We're probably going out for dinner just to see the neighborhood, but we never even lost power.
I forgot you were around here - we should meet up some time.

Sounds good, now that Irene is done messing with my wrenching time I need to get into high gear. The head work on the Scirocco is way behind schedule, and SHMBO wants more than one operational car in the house.
But once the red rocket runs again, yes we should.

That's the truth....Ludlow ( Mt Okemo) Chester, Brattleboro, lots of other places flooded. Lots of damage as well.
the lady I rent my garage from had a 100yo oak come down on her barn (not the one I rent the garage in) that thankfully caused little damage.. now she has tons of firewood to let cure

Your family is correct.
My area is screwed. If you are on facebook type in WCAX in the search bar and look at their photos, tells most of the story. Winds are just picking up now.
ugg.
(In RI)
My power went out around 9:45AM. Got it back around 9PM--which is awesome. There will be many going much longer.
I just had some branches down. Further down the street from me, there were some huge trees that were uprooted. Quite a sight.
I got away with murder on this one...
Good luck to those who are dealing with a big mess.
Southeastern,MA here. We lost power around 8:30-9 am,and as far as I know it is still out,but I wouldn't know because I haven't been home in hours. Started around 9am I was called into work, and bounced from building to building getting generators running that failed(never have had issues with any of these particular gensets). Went home around 5 pm so that I could give my sister a break from my boys,as I had her come over to keep an eye on them because my wife had neck surgery on Friday. Back out to work at 7pm after driving the family including my sister around to see the damage that Irene brought. Have been at work since, and will be until 7am I have been told. This is the first time I have had any down time as the rest of the day aside from the driving has been go-go-go!!!
Maybe being on strike was better? Nah this is way more fun!!! Tiring, but fun.
I have hooked up one portable genset so far,and had to break into a couple of offices as with the generator not running the card access scanners don't work. Oh did I mention we are not allowed keys for the buildings with card access? Makes sense for the guy that has to make sure the office is always working not be allowed access when the E36 M3 hits the fan. I love corporate thinking!!
This no power at home really sucks, and my bet is we don't have it back for a few days as the area I live in seemes to have been pretty hard hit with the wind. My oldest son starts school on Tuesday as well, and without power he is going to be stinking up the bus I bet(well water=no water without power). Not to mention we will be or already have lost all the food in the fridge/freezer.
I guess it could always be worse though. At least I am back to work making money, and everyone is alive with a roof over our head.
Glad that it's over. Left for work saturday at 3am, got home this morning at 3am. Luckily there wasn't much serious damage like was predicted in Manhattan but the trip home was a disaster. What is normally a 90 minute drive took almost 5 hours with a detour through some back roads in Connecticut and a trip across the Hudson. The flooding is unreal. I'm off today but I don't know how people are going to go in to the city from here anyway since trains are out and most of the roads running there are flooded at some point.
Lots of rain and wind. Power went off briefly yesterday, then stayed on. Cable was on last night but is off today. Down town traffic is a mess. Seems some of the traffic lights were out on the intersections on three different state highways. A historic covered bridge got washed away. Part of the thruway is closed No unneccessary travel allowed. And I found out my roof leaks.
