We got rain from the edge of it. And trees down. But my Eureka tents I left up in the back yard are dry.

Thru way closed , all traffic routed onto NYS 29 which happens to run right down main street. Traffic backed up for miles.

What part of the Thruway? We're on the road from pa to Ma via 84. So far traffic has been good.
I'm also in southeastern MA. My town got hammered. Not a whole lot of rain, but lots of strong winds. Lots of huge trees toppled over. My street was unpassable for a while yesterday, but it seems that guys in big Bro-Dozers kept driving around and cutting them all up with chainsaws and moving them off to the side, so that was cool.
We lost a tree branch and it nearly landed on two of my cars. That was the closest call I had. The tree that once owned those branches looked like it was going to snap and hit my house, but we lucked out. Many around me were not so fortunate. We had some transformers explode on my street after a day of on and off power, and that knocked it out until 3pm today. A lot of people are still in the dark.
found out my boss at the Borgata lost a deck to a neighor's tree... it fell neatly between his house and his pool.. crushing the deck and the fence on both sides of his property
photos from my town http://www.valleyreporter.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=4173&Itemid=38 ugly. Yet I'm amazed at the strength of this community, roads are re-opening after total rebuilds etc.
Guess what, kiddies? Katia is on her way, from the west coast of Africa and predictions call for CAT3 strength. Too early to say where she will actually go. Oregon is looking better.
I just found out that the 25-year-old son of my wife's long-term coworker and his friend drowned in the short-lived flooding here in Delaware. They apparently decided to go for a walk around midnight Saturday during the height of the storm. Nobody knows where they went, but their bodies were found yesterday afternoon washed up behind a local shopping center.
My sister in Richmond had their power and phone restored Tuesday afternoon. One day spent hauling fallen limbs to the dump and cleaning the yard. Fortunately no damage to house or vehicles. Lost some food from the fridge... minimal loss compared to what some folks went through.

Schenectady to Syracuse. Check road closings on 511.org.

Dan, are you guys alright? My Mother in law works about five minutes from those oil tanks and they were set home early in case the barges got loose and took out a tank or bridge
We had lunch here about a month ago, it was Jumpin' Jacks Drive in:
looks more like Jumpin Jacks DIVE in now
Duke.. sorry about your wife's Coworker. This is why most deaths in a hurricane occur when people get stupid and go outside. flying debris, wind, rain, and flooding is what kills people. It is rare to have a house fall down and kill somebody weathering a storm.

To quote Ron White: "Okay buddy. Let me explain something to you. It's not that the wind is blowing. It's what the wind is blowing. If you have a yield sign in your spleen... Jogging don't come into play. If you get hit by a VOLVO... how many situps you did that morning doesn't matter"
In reply to mad_machine:
People thought we overected by closing the buses and trains but one of the main reasons was to make it harder for people to go out and do stupid things.
Thanks Wally, we're fine wet basement and a few branches down. Trish and I take every Monday off between July 4th and Lobor Day, this last Monday was one to sit out. A barge with a crane on it broke loose and threatened the Dolly Parton bridge and the Crescent Bridge, the only north & south route over the river for 20 miles either way. Traffic was a mess.
My son lives in Mamaroneck which was evacuated. He left Monday morning so he could be at work in Manhattan by 10:30. He got off at 17 and crossed the river, everything 16 south was closed and 18 north. One more reason I'm not a trucker.
Dan
A man tried to drive around a road block and drove into the Schoharie creek. He didn't make it, truck was found the next day with him in it.
I was stationed in Charleston for a bit, came to a 4-way stop full of water after a summer deluge.
One car ahead of me, guy looks at a little kid standing on the opposite corner, looks at me in his rearview and shrugs. I smile and shrug back.
He proceeds ......
His new 400 Firebird went in up to the door handles!
Kid was standing on a fire hydrant.
My power went out at 3:30 am on Saturday. It came back on at 3 am today (Thursday).
Fortunately, I had bought a generator about six years ago, never opened the box, and stuck it out in my barn. Friday afternoon, I opened it up, wired it into the house and it saved my ass. I would have been exponentially more cranky without it.
I heart generators. I'm going to treat it to an oil change.
It's good to be back.
