Not me, The Wife. 81 in a 65. "I wasn't paying attention to my speed, I was thinking about other things". The last one set me off or 2 reasons. First, use the m-fing cruise control while on hour-long highway slogs. Second, pay freaking attention to your driving and daydream or think about ther stuff some other time! Lack of situational awareness might not be a speeding ticket next time, it might be a bad accident or worse. Grrrrrrrrr. Now I gotta play lawyer to at least hopefully avoid the moving violation and the points and insurance hit that goes along with that, but I'm sure I'll be $300+ lighter in the money clip just for court fees when I'm all done.

She tried to justify it by saying that she speeds so much she was due. Shoot, with that logic I'm due for 6 months in the pokey for repeated flagrant speeding. But I pay attention and know where the cops are and most importantly keep my speed low enough that they don't care if I'm going 8 over.

Anyone else have a clueless significant other?

81 in a 65 seems pretty reasonable to me.

Just remember this: for every ticket you've gotten, there is at least 10 you should have gotten, but didn't.

Look around for the lawyer, the last one I used handles most tickets for like 70 bucks. Granted mine was a bit more, but he got all of them I got in that stop thrown out. So in my opinion well worth it.

The trooper who stopped her confirmed what I knew. On the NYS Thruway, 10 over is safe, 11 over is ticket.

I have the same conversation you had all the time... only I'm the one quoting your wife's lines. These cars just beg to go faster.

Been there, done that. Only Mrs.Mini was doing 87 in a 65. "Just keeping up with traffic." She was traveling south on I-81 between Cortland and Binghamton, when a Mercedes, Audi, and Jag went whizzing by. She decided to follow along. Trooper picked her because she was at the end of the line. I told her next time do it in the 911 or my BMW- the trooper will think you're an ambulance chaser and leave her alone. Nothing $300 didn't fix(no pun intended)!

Can you guys still do things like ask for `Items of Particulars' on the radar/laser gun? Back in the dark days of the 55mph national limit, I had a lawyer once tell me, "..it's never too late to get on the brakes, once you get into court.."

If it's still possible, I don't know how much time it would cost you, though..

I don't mean to "diss" yer wife, but if she's doing 81 and "thinking about other things", IMO her next car should be a diesel Chevette with an AM radio.

Apparently it was a good day for the state of NY.The Mrs got popped for 73 in a 55 on the Taconic passing an underpass where they sit four or five deep. "It was so nice out I wasn't paying attention to my speed" This is becoming an annual event.

My fiance thinks that an A/T Civic is the best car in the world and would drive like a bat out of hell. Recently, she has slowed down, as in now scared of traffic and stays 5-15 under. If we have to go some where in 2 cars any more we truly go seperate as I can't tolerate staying behind her or waiting for her to catch up. It is now a "meet you there" policy.

I dont really go too fast any more, but rather focus on my line and proper shifting.

Sounds like the clueless one is actually you. Man, you keep thinking like that about her and you're going to find yourself single again.

Everyone, including you, makes mistakes. Get over it, get over yourself and your puffed up opinion of yourself. She got a ticket, she didn't go on a shooting rampage.

I see both sides. Ive been the one looking down at my speedo thinking "HOly crap! How did that needle get over there?" And I see your side about the situational awareness as well. There is a little stretch of road that I've seen pigs sitting regularly waiting to hand out tax slips (tickets BTW). I tell her all the time "we can't afford a ticket, your going 35 in a 25."
You just gotta let her know that she really needs to become more aware so she can avoid tickets and more importantly, something much worse....

I've been very situational aware and totally missed the cop right there in plain sight any number of times.

The cruiser wasn't moving or threatening, so I dismissed the object. I'm far more interested in moving cars, animals, debris, etc. A parked car way up ahead or sitting back in a driveway doesn't get much attention than a tree or a mailbox. A moving car, a drifting semi, a running child, a bicyclest, a crossing car, etc get a whole lot more attention.

In fact, I'd be willing to go so far as to say that if someone is busy studying distant parked cars to determine if they are cops that person is not as situationally aware of real dangers as they should be, or could be. They are in fact driving distractedly because of their obsession with parked cop cars. Pay attention instead to events going on around you.

I can't really complain about her not paying attention as she has never had even a minor accident but she does have a lead foot and sometimes it gets away from her.

Around here, 15 over is about the limit of getting reduced to non-moving violation. Last summer, SO was about 15 minutes behind me coming up the highway on a roadtrip (needed two cars), I called her cell to tell her about a LEO at a mile marker that I just passed - he gave me a nasty look (9 mph over, cruise on), but didn't pull off the shoulder. Anyway she puts her cruise down a bit as she passes, doesn't see the LEO and speeds up to "make up time" and gets pinched. Clueless.

I agree that you pay to play, but don't be stupid either.

81 in a 65 won't even keep up in some places around here. But, in others 51 in a 50 will get you taxed.

There was a town just south of Dallas that was a known speed trap so every one started going 5 under. The town went bankrupt.

Dude, it's the last week of the month. Troopers are crawling all over the highways here the last week or so of the month. I have a lead foot too, but I try to just keep with the flow of traffic, which is usually a nice clip of about 80 or so. I make sure I am not the fastest one around and it helps to "blend" with like minded drivers. I love it when I can get in with a pack who is paying attention and leaving a decent following distance. I find it's about the only time I can relax behind the wheel.

Tollway I355 west of Chicago today I looked down and was doing 85mph in a 55mph. Keeping up with tracking in Chicago is doing 80mph.

I did slow down to a slower 65mph.

That following a pack and leave a decent following distance doesn't always work. I was in OK, travelling west at something into lower to mid three digits. When that LEO caught up to me, he explained that it took him over six miles to finally catch me, and that was only because I slowed down when I saw his lights. He further explained that his radar lit up on the pack, he was slowing down to turn in the median and simply made the decision that he would never catch them so nevermind, when along I come with a second opportunity.

Luckily he let me off with a warning. I still subscribe to the pack theory and following distance, I have just lowered the level of stupidity on my part.
