I haven't done it in quite a while, but Navy Federal Credit Union used to preapprove you for up to a certain amount and provide a certified check for up to that amount that was good for 30 days. If the check was cashed you had a loan and needed to provide appropriate documentation etc. If the check never got cashed the whole thing went away after the 30 days. I think I did this with another credit union also.
