Short story: The engineers designed the car behind management's back in their spare time. It is a mid engined car like the Lancias and Peugeots that were kicking Audi's ass in Group B. Walter Rorhl drove the prototype and, even before any development, found it was immediately much faster and easier to drive than the S1 E2. Management found out and ordered all development halted and existing cars/materiel destroyed because they wanted to only rally production based vehicles.

It has more in common with an Audi 4000 Quattro than a Subaru Impreza has in common with a Group A Subaru rally car, let alone a WRC car (which theoretically has a production shell, maybe)

On the other hand, it's also slower at covering ground than a Group A Impreza, despite having almost twice the power.
