When I saw the picture of "Hemi Under Glass" I remembered my first date with my wife. We went with another couple to the Asheville-Hendersonville drag strip to watch his brother race. We rode in my friends 1952 Chevy 2dr. hard top. As it turned out Wild Bill Shrewsbury was there with his L.A. Dart wheel stand demo. car. the drag strip had no guard rails and the spectators lined the track with their street cars to watch the event. The 4 of us had just gotten back in the car to eat our lunch when Shrewsbury launched for his first run of the day. We couldn't even see his launch but saw that the people lining the track looked stunned and began to move away from the track. Soon we saw the car coming straight for us. He didn't even hit the brakes and caught the old Chevy in the RF fender depositing it onto a new 4 door chevy. We were all shook up but not hurt badly. Shrewsbury got out of his car throwing gloves and helmet onto the pavement cussing a blue streak about tearing up his g.d. fiberglass. He never even looked our way and still didn't address us as we got out of the car. To shorten the story, the track owner compensated my friend and with some stop leak in the radiator he drove us all home.
