It is never good when two aircraft carriers go anywhere together, unless that place is "back to port for refitting".

Likewise, here. I also stay out of the political threads for the same reason.

Guilty as charged. I was trying to be funny. It clearly didn't work.

Coal burner/crusher? I think I've seen those at local power plant

It's a late '40s, early '50s GE Steam turbine. It's connected to a generator. I think it's pretty neat.
NEW HOT LINK!: -The prison that it's at.

Heh....they ain't heading to port. Alert birds are set on both. You can bet the air crews are butts in seats or damn close by. I also wouldn't be surprised if they were at a modified condition Zebra. That's how we rolled every time we went through there (Straights of Whoremooze).
It's intimidating enough (for anyone sane) to see just one carrier battle group show up on your doorstep....two can be downright bedwetting. Also of note....there's what you don't see in the photo

Daaaang. Never seen the chitlins of a steam turbine before. That's pretty cool. I figured they all looked like this inside:
In reply to Curmudgeon:
That one appears that it maybe a blade style turbine. The one I took pictures of was a bucket style, and it's also a lot smaller than most of the google images of a steam turbines.
Here's someone else's hotlink of buckets. There would be stationary 'blades' to direct the steam into the buckets making the rotor turn (not visible in any of the pictures)
