I'm on prepaid now (MetroPCS) but our phones are dying and frankly the coverage area sucks.
My work cell phone is on Verizon which is a crap load better:

Page Plus Cellular - Pay as you go MVNO running on Verizon's network. Been on it for at least 3 years. Very reasonable and great coverage. Just not LTE yet.

I use Craigslist to find a gently used phone, Gazelle.com to verify the pricing and ATT via StraightTalk for provider.
both of those maps a extremely optimistic at best, and flat out lying at worst ...
if you've ever traveled through SC, anywhere other than near Charleston, Columbia, or Greenville/Spartanburg ... you know how iffy anyones coverage is

Oh yeah, at Faurecia in Greenville, SC we had Verizon work phone.
HORRIBLE, HORRENDOUS, They even said, we don't understand what is wrong. I had Sprint at the time and received better coverage. Everyone else got ATT in spite of our nice discount because Verizon just wouldn't work.
I have heard stories the exact opposite as well. I believe the legal term is puffery.
