First place I became aware of it was on the 325ix, that's what got the gears turning when I found out the Trailblazer and kin used a similar configuration.
I got to drool on and be under a few GTRs when I was at Nissan, they do something similar too.

Ford also did it in Europe, not in the US.

In the late '80's I worked with a guy that had one. It was pretty unremarkable, and in Silly Putty tan, similar to this one:
