Underneath I understand, but the sidewalls of the tires are as valuable for climbing as tread.

I believe the geometry on the sidewalls is what helps with climbing not the friction. I know friction helps a little but I believe the majority is from the bite.
Plus in muddin, it will be slick anyway.
