Believe it or not there was actually a 1700 cc VW powered dune buggy entered in the 1970 Daytona 24 Hour race. It was classified as a prototype because it was a one-off kind of car. The photo is a composite and shows the buggy on the track during practice followed by the Gulf Porsche 917K training "T" car of Jo Siffert. The two cars collided at the dog leg on the infield course. Damage was minimal to both cars but the Porsche team filed a protest to get rid of the car. The stewards ruled it a "racing accident" which allowed the buggy's owner to continue. However, since the buggy's owner was also a Porsche/VW dealer he didn't want to antagonize his business partners and he withdrew the car. Now imagine the story in the papers if he had actually run the race and finished. Especially if that buggy had finished ahead of some better known cars and drivers.
