That's not out of line with a lot of German cars. IIRC the one for an A8 is $1200.
Heck, I've done plenty of newer American cars where the blower was $400+. Why? I have no idea, I don't manufacture them.
The expensive ones are admittedly nice and quiet even on max blast.

I know the car, but every picture I've ever seen of it has been red, for some reason.

When I saw it a couple years back at the High Museum in Atlanta it was indeed gray-green. In the lights they had, it actually looked more green than it does in the first photo. Maybe the red one is a different car that was built on the same plan, or a previous repaint or something.
It was one of the coolest cars they had at the show.

Sounds from the writing like it had been modified previously (which might include the red) but was returned fairly recentlyto the way Edsel had it near the end of his days.

Interesting history with the car spending a lot of time in GA/FL. It was indeed painted red by an owner in 1958, possibly for a film appearance.

There's one kinda like a rat rod version of that, built out of a base Impreza, converted to RWD only, with a WRX swap, that shows up at our autocrosses.

Pics please.
Semi related after googling 'RWD Subaru RS rat Rod autocross'
Early in my relationship with my wife, she had an opportunity to order a 2.5 RS, but had a hard time deciding between that, an Integra, or an Eclipse GS. She chose:
It was traded for a POS Maxima when my son was born. We often question not buying the RS.

I'll try to get one tomorrow. It looks better than the green one there, but not as good as the white one above. So as not to party foul, here's the engine. It's all I could find online.

I assume the wrap or plastidip is to hide the results of the excursion into the woods. I think every one of those has been in a Single Vehicle Accident. Which is a shame, because they really are good little tools. I'd happily welcome an unmolested one into the fold, but I am afeard of what previous owners may have done.
