They're Strombergs. Way (way) before my time, but I guess the issue with them wasn't airflow so much as fuel flow, so that's why your'd see four and six and eight of 'em on an engine.
It'd be like someone today wondering why the hell Ford put sixteen injectors on some V8s when you can commonly find large injectors with high low-pulsewidth accuracy. Didn't exist in any real fashion back then.

That's a slightly newer one than my '66, probably has the 472. Easier to get parts but I don't like the interior as much. You do need to at least take it for a drive, they're awesome. And the hardtops don't have any structural rigidity, but I love driving around with all the windows down.
Given my choice, I'd probably go with a 1960.
