I consider randomly removing things for the sheer hell of it to be a very shiny and happy thing to do. If it ain't hurting anything, then yanking it out just makes things more difficult for the next owner.
It's still a Federal crime, BTW. They're just usually too busy to hand out $250k fines to J. Q. Public.
I've seen enough 4 figure horsepower figure cars with completely intact and functional emissions systems to buy into the thought that it hurts power.
Next rant: Air conditioning, and people who look at you funny if you say you want it. Or aftermarket companies that claim "OE fit" but when you mention that the A/C interferes, they backpedal.
One more reason why I like Turbo Buicks... EVERYTHING in the aftermarket works around A/C. Go fast with class. Run 9's and then drive home in comfort.
BTW - Spent most of yesterday and this morning making a (name withheld) radiator fit a 4th gen Camaro with a supercharger and A/C. Had to do a lot of unsavory things to the core support in order to make everything fit. If the supercharger belt was 3/4" further inboard (which would totally be possible but the manufacturer stuck the belts way out there for some reason) then there wouldn't have been an issue.
Car was running hot with the A/C on. 230 degrees driving down the road. First response we got when calling around for radiators is "Why do you have A/C in a performance car?"
So I'm a little bit ranty right now about the whole subject.

I didn't mean to indicate that I thought it was ok to do … just that there wasn't anyway for the PO to get caught, since there aren't any emissions tests for '96 and older in NC … no sniffer test … nothing
