Any thoughts on what that thing is on the top front of the engine? Looks like some kind of compressor.

Probably a compressor for the truck it was originally designed to go in.

Air compressor for the brake system. Very common although now they are installed to run off of gears on the engine instead of belt driven as they are not something you want to fail.
On this one it would be attached to the timing cover which is on the back near the bell housing beside the fuel filter (looks like a oil filter) below the injection pump. You can clearly see the block off plate that looks like a starter hole covered.
Really want to have some fun? How about an inline 6 where 3 cylinders are used for power and the other 3 are used as a compressor.
This is so popular there is a patent classification for it.
