financial aid is the combination of grants (free) and loans...very VERY few liberal arts degrees are free, I know a few that are needed (teachers) that are forgiven after so many years of service.
My degree at a liberal arts college was not entirely free. Kinda wish I has learned a trade instead.

This is precisely why I'm a German speaking electrician. Learning to be an electrician didn't cost me anything though. Not out of pocket at least.
