Technically, there are no carrier-based Spitfires... they are called Seafires.

I saw a wonderful docu on PBS about elderly surfers few years back. I can't recall who it was, but one of the first "big wave" surfers said something like "..one day when I was in my 40s, the thing broke on my head, drove me to the bottom, and I nearly drowned.
