You need to remove that thing if you want to use a 9" disk on a 4.5" grinder.
Yeah, that's not happening in my shop. A 9" grinder wheel is good for about 7K RPM. All of my 4.5" grinders turn closer to 14K.
My business partner removed the guard from one of the shop grinders and pitched it. He wasn't real happy when I cut the cord off the grinder and threw it away too. Too bad, I can't afford for one of the guys to use it and get injured.
I've had too many wheels explode to take any chances like that.

Wheel of Death is a fitting name. I've never had anything bigger than a Dremel cutoff wheel explode (just say no to HF cut off wheels!) in my face and despite wearing eyepro, it was still not a pleasant experience.
