Probably something like that. It is a well known issue with the Mazda RX2. Front hinge hood and the only welds are at each front corner. The center is held down by 6 or 7 dabs of space age adhesive from the 70's. That stuff dries out and the skin lifts while the frame stays put. It happened to a friend a few year ago at about 125mph going down one of the straights at Sebring. I have heard other stories where it flips all the way back and breaks the windshield.
