You should look up British Canal Boats, sometimes called Narrowboats. The kind I like best is the Widebeam style.
There's a local company that rents Canal Boats. Anchored in Waterford, NY. Five day trip, go north th Champlain, south to NYC or west to Lake Erie. Most people don't want to motor 2.5 days, then turn around and cover the same scenery again; they go 5 days out, pick up the prearranged car and drive home. They hire my retired brother to bring the boat home. Not a bad gig.
