I mean, I get the engineering point for an oval track car, but I'm not sure how I feel about putting the driver in the rotation plane of those wheels...

LM, exactly.  Like a Becker Jetvan for the non-titan of industry.

The first SCCA road races I experienced were here around 1964. I was a kid and a spectator of course. It was Thompson version #2 or #3, depending on if you count the early oval-only events. Anyway, this was the so-called "George Weaver" circuit called Thompson Raceway, 1957-1967. In my opinion, it was the best version ... better than today's layout with the oval.
