For the youngsters in the audience, that's Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway in the movie "The Thomas Crown Affair," from 1969. The scene was filmed (yes, filmed) at a beach on the "North Shore" in MA. The dune buggy is a mod'd Meyers Manx with a Corvair engine. That actual car recently sold for nearly a half million dollars at auction at Amelia.
IIRC, the Corvair engine gave it evil handling characteristics and caused Steve to drive into the surf once when he was hooning.
In reply to spitfirebill :
I'm sure the added weight of the Corvair engine made it even more tail happy. But Steve seemed to be handling it pretty well in the video. I read somewhere that it was a braking issue that caused them to go straight into the water. Who knows. Anyway, the salt water excursion necessitated a full tear-down of the engine as well as other systems of the car. That was done at Ray Caldwell's Autodynamics in Marblehead, MA, builders of FV's, FF's, the Hustler kit car, Sam Posey's Can-Am car, and the Deserter dune buggies.
Obligitory pic. This time on the ice in St. Moritz:
A few pictures from the Antique Truck Show this weekend. It was less attended and with fewer trucks than in the past, I understand there's a big show in Pennsylvania.
This one's my favorite.
