Allisons. Boeing built a single Allison-engined B-17 as a theoretical alternative in case the radials became scarce. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_XB-38_Flying_Fortress

But as a child in the 1980s, I DD-ed a burgundy SAAB type 97GT.

It's technically an XB-38. They built a prototype using Allison V12s. It had a notably higher top speed, but its service ceiling was lower. The prototype ended up having an engine catch fire, the crew bailed out, and it was destroyed. By that point, the Allisons were needed for P-38s, P-39s, P-40s, P-51s and P-63s and couldn't be spared for bomber production, so the program was abandoned.
