Ardun prototypes? That sure looks like a Ford flathead block on the engine stand.Pic possibly related?
You are right on the engine being a ford flathead but I believe this is a 1 of 1. It was used for racing in Turismo Carretera in the early 50's
Second pic is the same head in the museum where it is now
The car in the back is probably where it was used
I love how the engine photos on Wiki are just a shot of the engine cover. Thank you, so very helpful.

Ford 427 SOHC. The infamous "Cammer" or the "90-Day Wonder". That one was when "Sneaky Pete" Robinson was tinkering with a gear-drive to get around the supposed issue of timing chain stretch (it had one 6-foot long chain), but he was killed in a crash while testing a weird engine-assisted front ground effect, using the engine to suck the car down to the track, and with him, development on the "Cammer" as a Top Fuel motor pretty much ended. Now, if you listen to Connie Kallitta, the timing chain stretch issue was Ed Pink making a mountain out of a molehill. Kalitta said the biggest issue with the Cammer was that it still used a Ford 427 FE bottom end. He said after a weekend of racing, you'd go to lower the oil pan down on a jack and the main caps, saddles, and crankshaft would come down with it. He didn't have much good to say about the Boss 429 in Top Fuel usage either. The exhaust ports make a pretty sharp turn right out of the chamber, and unburnt nitro would collect there and then explode the exhaust ports right out of the cylinder head.
