I am 100% convinced that the creators of most of these old-timey ads knew exactly what that word meant (it's had its current meaning in some subcultures since at least the '20s, if not earlier) and were just amusing themselves by trying to pull one over on their stodgy corporate bosses. And hey! It worked!

I was unaware of the homosexual connotation of the word "Gay" until sometime in the 80's, I would bet.
And I'd be willing to bet if you snickered at Humphrey Bogart when he was sucking on a fag, he'd kick the E36 M3 out of you.
There are a lot of perfectly good words that have been hijacked for various reasons.
