I really don't NEED anything. However, I have a six year old son who is dying to pick out something car related for daddy. My grm subscription is already dealt with.

Any consumables you'll need to replace eventually? Drill bits? Those disposable rubber gloves? Maybe some more screwdrivers? You can never have too many screwdrivers

Screwdrivers. You are on the right track!
How about a project you both can work on together--ask for plasti-dip and then do the emblems with him.
Movies--Cars, Le Mans, Worlds Fastest Indian
Otherwise a Leatherman/other multi-tool. Groupon has a deal right now.
Ohh--another idea: Ask for duplicates of tools, and keep doing it for every Christmas/birthday. Everything that you use most often. The whole thing. Use them sparingly, only when he's helping you. Then 10 years from now, give the whole kit to him for Christmas.

I really like this idea. Sort of like charging your adult child rent to live in the basement and then giving it back to him/her when they move out as a nest egg to get started in life.
I pretty much do all that now. He has his own tool box. His tools are in better shape than mine. I've found that sometimes, I'll borrow his stuff.......especially screw drivers....hence why the screwdriver suggestion was a really good one for me.

That's a great site. Some of those had me cracking up (run DMC). Can't believe I've never seen that before.
I used to use my allowance to buy Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars for my father when I was kid, and spent time carefully selecting the ones I thought he'd like. (Mostly Fords, since our family bleeds blue.)
A lot of them are still on display in the garage, and they bring a smile to his face whenever they're brought up around the holidays.
Duluth trading has a cool vest/apron thingy that was on sale for nearly $30, iirc. Aprons in general are cool kid gifts, especially if the kid gets to decorate it up for you, and who can't use some in the shop?
My kids usually get me a car related t shirt. Ive also received a few sets of screwdrivers and one year a really neat craftsmen quarter inch drive set in a little zip up binder style carrying case.
Sears and your local auto stores both have great displays of treasures for you that will sparkle a wee lads eye and not break the bank. From drill bit sets to wrenches to tool bags and tape measures and fuzzy dice.
Little LED work lights for a baseball cap? (buy 2 sets)
Rechargeable work or flash light?
I saw an LED flood light, similar to the hot ass 5 X 8 halogens, but won't set things on fire. ($26)

Another idea is to have mom take him to Harbor Freight (or some other discount tools place) with the $30 and tell him to pick out something he thinks daddy needs. It could end up very insightful or completely hilarious. Plus, he'll have to really think about it and watch you in the shop more.
