Hello, I have a possible buyer interested in my car but unfortunately he is located halfway across the country in New Jersey. I was wondering what car shipping companies you guys recommend? The car will be traveling from Sioux Falls, SD to Linwood, NJ. Any help is appreciated. I remember seeing a topic on this recently but couldn't find it with the search function.

I got a quote from http://www.autosmoving.com/auto-transport-quote.php but am not sure how reliable this site is. It said it would be 690 for an open trailer and 1150 for an enclosed trailer. Both are lower than I expected.

The car is a '95 M3 if that makes any difference and it is fully functional/driving.

Thanks Joshua

Uship.com is an online bidding place...people post what they need to ship and shippers bid on the job.

Never used them, but the concept is interesting and it seems like it's working.

Individuals can also ship cars by rail, apparently cheaply.

Again, no experience with this.

Hmmm sounds kind of sketchy but I'll look into it, any companies that you would recommend directly?

My buddy just left uship last month after 5ish years (was like employee #3), his wife still works there, I did some intern work for them one summer as well. They are for sure legit. Just check feedback for whoever you select carefully as some can be less reliable than others.

From SF to NJ you could buy me a return ticket and I'd deliver it.....

Tell him to buy a plane ticket and drive it back over the weekend.

Roadtrip, get's to know the car, and no filthy strangers putting their mitts on his car.

Uship is great! It's owned by the eBay/PayPal company, so yes, it is legit. You can accept or decline bids after looking at a shipper's feedback, and they have a pretty hard-core guarantee. I shipped a non-running Jeep J20 with 3 engines in the bed from Washington State to Florida. Accepted the bid Monday (Thanksgiving week), they picked it up Tuesday, and it was being delivered the following Tuesday.

oh, and absolutely, positively stay AWAY from Weber Auto Transport in Vancouver, Washington. They are thieves, liars, and scam artists. We have a local Sheriff's Department case against them, and we aren't the only ones. Watch out!

They're not "owned" by eBay/PayPal, but their first venture capital came from the same investors that supplied the VC for eBay.

like eBay, there are great folks on there, as well as some other less helpful, just check the feedback to make sure they're not crooks.

I recently shipped my Mini from AL to MN. I used Reliable Carriers. They were not the cheapest, but there were so many companies that I looked at, emailed, and talked to that seemed a bit on the sketchy side so I went with Reliable.

I am still getting daily emails from some of the companies giving me a quote to ship a car that was already shipped in October.

Get all the insurance info from whoever you select, and make sure you have the buyer check the vehicle over well before signing off on the bill of lading when taking delivery. Especially bumpers and the roof.

Also, you may want to look into whether or not the car has built in tie downs. If not, I would recommend specifying wheel strap so you don't end up with someone wrapping a chain around a control arm and bending it.

If you work with a broker you will probably pay a couple hundred dollars more than if you can book direct with the carrier.

I recommend you allcoaststransport.com. Call Michael at 818-924-2217 and deal with him personally. They are at least insured and reliable. My personal opinion is, that is too risky letting unknown users to bet on my business. A good article about car shipping: http://www.squidoo.com/car-shipping-guide

I used USHIP when I bought a car from a fellow GRM'er 400 or so miles away. Got plenty of bids, went with someone who wasn't the lowest but quite competitive with lots of good transaction reviews. Asked him some questions before accepting his bid and I felt confident with his answers. Aside from a slight hiccup with scheduling it went smoothly.
