My brother teaches at a small Lutheran high school in the Bronx where most of his kids have behavior issues that got them kicked out of other schools. Most of them are not going to go on to college so he is trying to get them to think about careers after they leave school. He doesn't have much of a plan yet as this is his first teaching job and they just sprung this on him.

For a summer program he has six kids, and the school says Fridays are field trip days. They are providing a bus and box lunches the rest is up to him. Besides the usual beach and museum trips other teachers do he wants to take them to talk to some people about planning for their future. He has put some calls in to people at the police, fire department, and the local National Guard Armory. I am calling some people at the bus company. We were hoping for a few more ideas

Machine Shop? Construction? My kids really like both so far. They're not HS yet, sadly.

I'm watching a show on CNBC called Trash Inc: The Secret Life of Garbage. It's fascinating.

FYI, DSNY starting salary is $70k per year. That might get their attention. It's an essential service dealing with an unending challenge. Maybe a trip to see what happens to what we discard will inspire some of them to find a solution.

Construction? Don't they have some giant tunnel under the city? Maybe skilled dock work (all easy to combine with some math or science problems)

You could try and get a "behind the scenes" tour of a show/sporting event, lots of cool stuff there.

Electrical utility jobs. Whole industry is retiring, starting salaries usually @40k after a couple years of trade school, generally over $100k in less than 5 years.

Linemen are usually fairly easy to get ahold of and they have the cool bucket trucks and big equipment, but the dispatchers will have the better eye candy and bigger picture. Power plants are also great for tours, huge equipment and clean facilities.

Pick a local utility and make some calls.

Cheesecake Factory? Honda Service Department? $20 for the first kid who says "So what happens if one of your dipE36 M3 techs can't be bothered to use a torque wrench?"

From what I hear, they send potential new employees to some kind of Cheesecake Factory school for a few weeks to weed out the riff raff. Lots of memorization and test taking.

It may actually be easier to get a job as a lube tech at a E36 M3ty Honda dealership Georgia.

In The Bronx, NY. I would get a hold of the Unions. Say what you will be the Unions are still likely strong in NY. In addition, the Unions may like the opportunity to recruit. Find out what the paths are for their apprentice programs.

You'll need to log in to post.
