For the past week or so, starting around dark some nights, I've been hearing a car stop at the 3 way intersection down the street from my house, rev his engine, and do burnouts up the street past my house.  A few times he's stopped in front of my house and used my driveway as a turn-around.  Other times he's just zoomed past.  Always the same car- I can't get a good view of it because of trees, but it seems like something low, black, 2 door, and RWD based on the burnouts.  I think it's something 80's or 90's Japanese, 4 cylinder (based on the loud exhaust).

Last night he was at it again, and did it while I was reading my daughter to sleep (around 8 o'clock).  About 8:30 I went out to the garage to work on my car for a bit, and about 9:45 I heard his engine again.  I sprinted out to the road (we live in a rural neighborhood; my driveway is a good half a football field) and just as he passed my house he stopped and started to back into my driveway.  I ran up to the driver's side and started yelling at him, cussing him out, and told him to get the berkeley out of here.  Alas, I was in such a hurry I didn't catch his license plate, and it was so dark out all I could see was his pale, pasty-white face inside the car.  He mumbled something like "My bad" and drove off.

About 20 minutes later, I was in the house telling Mrs. VCH about this, when suddenly we heard like 2 or 3 loud, buzzy cars come up the street and stop in front of the house.  They revv'd their engines and were yelling.  I stepped out of the house, but my wife, the smart one, said "Get back in here!" so I did, and called the police.  The cars stayed on the street and as near as I can tell they never got out of the cars, and after sitting there for a few minutes they buzzed off.

An officer called me about 10 minutes later to talk to me about what happened.  He said he was cruising the neighborhood and did not see the cars.  I asked him to stop by the house, so he and another deputy came by about 5 minutes later.  I told them what all had happened.  He said they'd been getting similar reports from other areas, and were patrolling to try to catch them.  He asked if they could do a "black out" (park a patrol car, lights off, in my driveway) and I told him, sure, anytime you want.  I told him it was always about the same time- right after dark, but not every night.  The driver, from what I could see of him, seemed to be about high school age.

I posted it in "Next Door" before I went to bed and this morning had a few comments from neighbors about the same thing.  It's especially frustrating for me, as a car guy.  I take my own cars up and down the street, test driving them, but I'm not doing burnouts and speeding up and down the street, at all hours, and turning around in other peoples driveways.  berkeleying idiots.

You need to assert dominance with bigger, gnarlier burnouts.  It's the only reasonable way to handle this situation.

the other day there were some kids buzzing up and down my neighborhood on 2 stroke dirtbikes.   It was mid afternoon. I noted that they were wearing all the gear and that my 2 month old smiled whenever he heard them zoom past.

Cool.

That said, yeah, burnouts and stuff is a weee bit different as well as timing.  consider a motion detector camera to catch them turning around.  That way you can at least report a plate.

You need a scare crow or a mannequin that can magically appear in front of them when they go buzzing by.

Trail camera out at the end of the driveway.  The kind that sees motion then records.  My parents have one for catching people illegally hunting on their property.

the police sound concerned so a video of the cars with license plates would go a long way.

A camera's a good idea.  It's a long way from the house so a wireless one (or even wired) would be a PITA, but one of those ones they use for tracking wildlife would be a good idea.  Anyone have any recommendations for a good one?

Yeah, we have neighbors who ride ATVs and dirtbikes, and there's always someone with a loud exhaust cruising around.  The neighbor has a "lot truck".  But this was over the line, obnoxious, late at night, and dangerous.  Not to mention illegal.  Especially the bit about them returning and threatening.

I thought about getting an 8' long piece of lumber and driving nails into it every few inches...  devil

That sucks.  I'm following to see what happens.

I've had similar behavior from neighbors (minus the confrontation).  Extremely loud exhaust, burnouts, rolling coal, etc. in a residential neighborhood.  ATV and 4x4 shenanigans are the worst.

Private camera footage is inadmissible in Ohio for traffic violations so that might or might not work. Could give them someone too talk to but not ticketed. There's 6 burnouts in front of my house because my friends are immature but it's never been done at night time.

Also for the fun folks saying anything along confrontation and damaging his car, a lawyer will have a field day with that. Younger me got new drag radials and enough money to do burnouts all week because a farmer thought throwing a handful of nails in front of my car was the correct answer.

In reply to spitfirebill :

It's definitely foreign, and 4 cylinder.

Did some googling around, I think MD would allow private video footage.  Not really any different than a dashcam.  At any rate, yeah, at least send the police their way.  And if they show up when the parents are around (assuming they live with parents) then maybe parents will take care of the rest.

Going to cruise around a bit after work today and see if I can spot any of the cars down the street they always seem to be coming from.  Just for information....

Was that on a public street?  I think if he did that on his own property, and you were driving on his property, that would be a different matter.

With children and the disturbance I understand your feelings.

On the other hand they are a rare commodity. Young guys involved in cars.

OK they are stupid, and what they are doing is stupid.  But hey, young car guys!

If  it were me I’d figure out a way to connect with them and try to steer them in a more constructive and safer way to mess with cars. Maybe take them to a drifting event

It is easy to play Monday morning QB, and I am in no way defending burnouts in a neighborhood, but if it was a dumb HS kid, and you had handled this section differently could it have had a different outcome?  Could talking to him about why what he was doing was annoying changed the situation instead of cussing and yelling at him?   As it stands, I see a lot of engine revving at your house in the future...

Heck the kid sounds more responsible than most of my idiotic actions.  I mean he did it later in the evening when all the young kids, and a lot of adults are in bed, and on a what sounds like a somewhat rural road.  On the other hand, my stupidity tended to take place during daylight hours in public places with an audience and proceeded by the phrase "watch this..."

Frankly I do not care if current or future generations are car guys.  That said, if they are going to be, i'd rather they not be stupid shiny happy people that make us responsible car guys look bad.

Yes, I thought about it myself and wished I'd been cooler-headed about the confrontation.  More flies with honey and all that.  Doesn't excuse their actions in the least, but in terms of actually soling the problem...yes, I will attempt to be more the adult in the future.

As for the rural road, yes, it is, but there are a lot of families and small children who live on it.  There's an old farmhouse right at the intersection where he does the burnouts, and they have 4 small children.  And I have heard this being done not just at night- though that's when I've heard it the most.

Eh, he went from causing a nuisance to harassment. At that point he's crossed the line from somewhat responsible (maybe) hooning into being an asshat. Sure Volvo could have handled it better, but in the heat of the moment I can understand it.

Public road. If he's doing it on your private property it's actually vandalism. I'm guessing he's doing the burnouts on the road and using your driveway as a 3 point turn around.

No worries dude, heat of the moment and all that.   [dropstep beat me to it]

After my other post, I was also thinking I wonder if they don't know any better.  We all have to remember the HS aged kids now are  the youtube generation.  That is what is raising a lot of these kids and teaching them about cars, etc.  It isn't a parent/older adult to guide them in the ways of the car guy, they see some other goofball doing burnouts get a bunch of "likes" or comments and think that's what its all about.

I hope it works out in your favor.  If not there are some enablers on here who can help you find the biggest loudest RWD car to get in on the burnout competition.  lol

You know Volvo, I'm only an hour away and am constantly on the lookout for an imported, peaky 4-cylinder that will do burnouts... maybe I can assist you with some kind of citizens' confiscation? cheeky

Yeah, I get that.  The whole sitting in front of my house revving engines reeked of Fast and the Furious or Grand Torino.  Just dumb.  I used to do stupid crap (and still do) but no way would I have ever had the chutzpah to get a bunch of friends and go try to terrorize someone at their house.  Especially not in a rural area such as where we live, where folks are often self-defended.  That took some real stupidity there - internet-level stupidity.  If they'd threatened my wife or my kids by actually coming on my property there would have been real trouble.

Mrs VCH ixnayed the "go do burnouts in front of their house" idea already. Like I said, she's the smart one.  I'm the dumbass who runs out to the road to yell at stupid kids.

That being said, I wouldn't want that happening in front of my property. I hope you find out who it is, and I hope that a mature, reasonable outcome is the end result here. I was probably that young kid once, and now I'm "get off my lawn" guy. If these punks make it to mature adulthood, they'll probably be "get off my lawn" guy too.

Yup. But being a former version of this kid every Time someone tryed to stop us we just moved back too a later time. I was kind of an shiny happy person as a teenager. Just letting you know to make sure anything you do is on your property.  The best thing you can do is talk too the police like you did and hope they catch them.
