The local car dealers have been filling my mailbox with notices making sure that I'm aware that my Jeep Cherokee is qualified for the Cash for Clunkers Program. Some of these programs are covered with fake government emblems of eagles and national monuments.

The last free flyers were from the local Ford Dealer, the local Hyndai Dealer and the local Toyota Dealer. How does buying a car from any of those places help out Chrysler or GM? Why does the government want me to send my money to South Korea?

Considering the fact that no job seems to be secure in the current economy, why does the government want me to get into debt another $30,000 or so. Isn't too much debt why we are in this mess in the first place?

No. Debt is good, comrade, so long as you continue to pay your loans until the day you die, peniless and surrounded by inexpensive quality chinese goods.

Hey SD:

Cash for Clunkers...I thought you might be trying to unload a certain Lotus!

Crap for Clunkers is designed to stimulate ALL manufacturers sales. Lifetime warranties from FiaBamaCorp are there to stimulate Chrysler sales and The ReVoltIng is here to Stagnate GMs sales.

i have a feeling that none of these ads require you to finance the new car in order to get the rebate...

Recyling old Lotuses is good for the environment.

It also helps getting poluting, bad fuel economy pigs off the road and help stimulate the economy. (Even when you buy a south korean car, local people are still getting paid because of it: dealers, banks/credit unions/insurance companies, quick lube joints, ...)

Of course I like my Cherokee and it will not be sent to the crushers.

It's a quick fix built on lies and fake money.

I'm not looking forward to finally learning the lesson we're due to learn.

Rick Perry started a state program like this a few years ago to take cars that can't pass an emissions inspection off the road. The state car dealers association lobbied hard for the program. The program bombed.

The problem is that poor people who drive old smoky cars can't afford $400 a month car payments even if the government chips in $2,500 for the down payment.

Niether will mine. It actually gets fairly good gas mileage compared to what I could be using to tow free Lotuses around.

A $4,500 incentive from the government to buy a car. An $8,500 from the government to buy a house. It's sounds like they are trying to pump up the old economy based on borrowing and spending instead of going in a new direction. The crazy thing is that more people are saving money now like they have been telling us to do for years, probably out of fear.

In reply to Snowdoggie:

interesting thing about that is that i'll end up with more savings after my 8k credit than i had before i bought the house, and im spending only about 150 bucks more per month for pmt/taxes/HOA than rent was when i was renting a 750sf 1 bedroom apartment.

Unless you can get a tax advantage car repayments are generally idiotic, after a year you owe more than the car is worth.

Yeah, that'd be about right...

I think the logic behind new car buying is suspect, but I encourage it for cars I might want down the road. BTW, you should really think about picking up one of those light diesel pickups that might be coming...

The energy and waste to build a new car can never be paid back by recycling your old car . The money is being borrowed and " heavy dues will be paid " http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VXAn51e3T4s in the future . Keep your clunker its better for mother earth .

This means you could be as low as 145. Frankly, my dear, I couldn't give a damn.

That was a savage burn.

Assuming this is a recent graph the I.Q. distribution of the population seems to be drawing inward toward the average.I took a Mensa pre-membership test based on a 1995 scale and with a lowly I.Q. of 150 I scored in the 98th percentile, not the 99.9th as it would be on this graph.

It seems to be both a good and a bad thing...

It looks like you are going to need more money for those car payments too. Car prices are going up even though unemployement is going up and wages are actually going down. How well did that work for gas prices?

There's more than one kind of test, too.

Yanks my chain that I worked for years to get out of paying interest (due to my belief that banks are evil and greedy) only to have my taxes raised so they can help banks rope more people into interest paying situations.

I may have heard wrong, but is it also a provision that these "clunkers" are valued at scrap prices for a trade in value?

Does this mean that the cars are to be crushed or are they available for parts recycling through the local "pick-N- Pull"?

Since the only car I have that is eligible is my 69 Mustang convertible, could it reappear on the road with a salvage title?

Since GM now has government managment, will they be unable to resell cars that qualify as "Clunkers".

Will this possibly creat ea "car bubble" when this easy credit promotion interacts with real life?

Sorry for so many questions, but I just don't trust a deal that sounds too good.....and I really don't trust this one which sounds like a train wreck from day one.

P.S. IQ tested several times at 145 average..was told that this was top 2 percent.
