Meh, that's a load of crap.
It was crazy high that summer, and then dropped, and kept falling, before the election. Lowest I saw was the next town over, 1.26/gal. I don't think the blame can be pointed at him. Had McCain been elected, they would've blamed him.
I'm registered independent BTW.
I did the cash for clunkers deal. Got $4500 for a 2000 Blazer that I otherwise couldn't have gotten $500 for. That Blazer was the biggest piece of crap to ever disgrace 4 tires and I was never so happy to see a vehicle crushed.
We got $4500 from cash for clunkers, and Chrysler matched it with another $4500, and we also qualified for another $2000 rebate, so we paid $10,000 cash for a brand new PT Cruiser for my wife. No complaints with C4C here.

I said it before the election.. wether Obama or McCain.. I felt sorry for whomever got elected. They inherited a right mess that was going to mark them as being one of the worst presidents ever

Actually it is still a fact even with your added info, BTW when I was in Texas in 1999 gas was $1.08 a gallon, That is also a fact.

Of course, why would you complain that our tax dollars helped you purchase a new car?

Yep thats right, and I can sleep like a baby knowing that. My whole life I've paid umpteen thousands of dollars in taxes that went to things that I don't agree with, and whatever I got from C4C is that much less the politicians could steal for themselves or their criminal friends.

Well said Aeromoto.
c4c removed many affordable 4th and 5th hand cars that folks like us would have purchased. Most weren't classics, but many were perfectly serviceable units. I see it as a big waste.
Think of all those Vortec and GT40P heads that were scrapped...
That is some sweet OE hotroddery right there folks!
We clunkered a 1992 Camaro that needed one of everything. Paid $13,500 for our Astra after the C4C money and GM cash. No regrets.

You're welcome.

...and the other 99% of the 690,000 cars taken in were clapped out minivans, camrys, GM front drive sedans, and various other underwhelming crapboxes that no one has even missed.

In more ways then one. Waste of energy, tax payers money and cars.

Well, I had a big ol ranty reply full of pith and wit, and I remembered 2 things:
I will end with saying I do not support what you did. Its all fine and well that you can sleep well and whatever yaddah yaddah...rationalizing a bad decision doesnt make it a good one, it only makes you feel better. 2 wrongs dont make a right.
Edit...
And lastly...surprised no one has commented on the fact that you intentionally bought a PT Cruiser, new, from a dealer, on purpose

He was just happy to get his share of the wellfare pie. It's awesome that our government is in the car business. I want a program set up so I can start trading in my other stuff, too. I think $10k is too much to pay for a gussied up Neon, btw.
She wanted the PT, not me, and if you have a wife, this needs no further explanation.
And, I don't have to rationalize it because I don't feel it was a bad decision. In fact I've been wishing that they'd do C4C again because I'd like another new car for myself.
Would I have been a better patriotic American if I would've sold my garbage Blazer (by the way, F@ck you, General Motors!) to the scrap man for $500 and not taken advantage of C4C?
In case you hadn't noticed, the whole game is rigged. Wakey Wakey, Eggs and Bakey!! Time to open those eyes! People sit back and talk about our gov's trillions of debt like the cash just went into some oblivious void, like it was jettisoned into some black hole out in space? The trillions went into the hands of our politicains, their brother-in-laws, their counrty club buddies, and of coarse the corporations that grease every single repuke and demoE36 M3 politician with power tie and dark colored business suit. It didn't just vanish, it was stolen, and the only difference between the two uber-parties is that they are fronting for different groups of sticky fingers. And, meanwhile, they have the common people of this country at odds over abortion, what grown adults can or cannot do in their bedrooms, and god forbid- steroids in baseball, while behind the smokescreen they steal EVERYTHING for themselves. So, long story short, I took the $4500 and slept like a freakin baby. Sue me.
berkeley C4C in the ass and anyone who thought it was a good thing.
Cause of shiny happy people taking in their E36 M3piles to trade for E36 M3 they couldn't afford, the used market dried the hell up and I couldn't find anything actually worth 2500 dollars to spend 2500 dollars on and got saddled with a 500 dollar pain in the ass.
Way to go America, you bunch of berkeleying morons.
Wow...just wow. So, watered down, uncle sam steals money for dumb stuff. It makes you mad. So to get back, you use some of the stolen money selfishly? How is that justifiable? Yes, you are rationalizing when you say "the bad thing I did is ok because they did it first..." , thats the VERY DEFINITION OF RATIONALIZING. It doesnt make it less bad. Wakey wakey...youre sorely mistaken if you think Im some naive schoolyard tool...you had a car you were unhappy with, and you say "berk you GM" like they forced you to buy that blazer...then you take money in a program designed from the ground up to prop up GM, and try to pass it off as your righteous middle finger to the man...jeeesh,
