What exactly is going on here?
I had not considered the Cougar/Melincamp angle.
Personally, I started here as jrw1621 which was a screen name given to me by AOL a million years ago. It is my initials combined with address numbers of a house I lived in for 8 years. It worked fine and I still use it a lot to this day. But, as I started attending GRM events I noticed it is rather akward to introduce yourself as an "alphabet soup" of seemingly random number and letters. At that point, for flow and consistency I changed my screen name to JohnRW1621. Still a mouth full of random at the end but clearly addressable as John. I then eventually just dumped the alphabet soup ending and replaced with my last name.
For Seth, the name of Seth Duece might be a cool pseudonym to write under. Makes for a combination of genuine and memorable like many other Rock Stars.
The signature line can also serve as a great place to tie it all back together. I recommend in the signature you add your famous line of, "my other race car broke a head bolt."

Why not? Worked for Shatner.
Shatner is one handsome hunk of a man. Too bad he so crazy.
GRM is my safe place. It tends to be where I keep the majority of my opinions to myself and if a coworker or future employer happens to notice my screen name associated with GRM, all the better.
Between GRM and Expedition Portal, they are the two places where I'd have no problems meeting a member in a dark alleyway.

A MINI club I was/am part of did that years ago. We had pins made that had your screen name and real name on them, although with color graphic representing your car. Since my screen name is my real name, it was a bit redundant in my case.

We also did the name tag thing a the Mitty a few years back. It worked great - though I was also in the redundant club.

Pfft. It's a fad and will die off quick.
These things never last.
As a side note, my name came about many moons ago as I had habit of destroying threads with off-topicness. I was said to be like "Godzilla smashing through Tokyo". So the name caught on and has been that way since.

In the mid-2000s, I attended a tech fair/conference in Omaha as Tyler Durden.
No one batted an eye.

This is apparently the most impactful thing I've ever said on this forum. I'm not sure if I should be proud or ashamed.

I raced an entire season with the name Keyser Söze above the window on my race car, and entered under that name at tracks other than my home track. Never once got called on it.
Hmm. Not really working for me.
My username is pretty much my name anyway, just a play on the NISMO name
