Back to the original question- Honda has a small car. The Fit is a little tin box to transport people. They also have an Accord, which is not a tin box, and will carry people farther in more comfort.

The Civic is a tin box, with bad seats and lousy sound insulation (every one I test drive sounds like it needs at least one wheel bearing, but they never do) so fewer people are inclined to buy it.

Also- the guy at Honda who designs their parking brake handles needs has cost them Civic sales. I've thought of marketing a small pillow to put over the handle so my knee doesn't hurt so badly.

Finally- I like hatchbacks. I am now in the minority.

I don't know who buys Civics, as I am not in that market segment. But, if my 21 year old daughter didn't already have an Accord...then the Civic would be high on the list, if not first.

I would like to see another AWD Civic wagon, but that could "potentially" hurt CRV sales, so that's not going to happen.

Ideally, IMHO, I believe Honda should ramp up their involvement in the WRC and then base a model around that.

Yeah, I do think the death nell of the of the compact wagon in America was the rise of the cute-ute. And honestly, I can't blame'em. The first gen CR-V and Rav4 were excellent little softroaders that sold like skinny jeans in Brooklyn.

It's still funny that people are arguing over the popularity of the top selling car of it's segement. One that puts the car in the top 10 of all cars sold in the US.

Dunno, but that sure seems like a popular car- be it ugly, poor handling, and cheaply made or not.

It's because it doesn't have 350hp, RWD, flex fuel, 42mpg highway and only cost $16,500.

I own an88 CRX si and a 90 Civic si. To me these are iconic automobiles. I think that many people think back to that era and earlier and lament that Honda is not making cars like that now. They aren't thinking about the fact that the Civic is in reality a huge success. Sales may be down in the past couple months, but that doesn't mean the car is drek. Its beating a dead horse at this point, but what the population of this board like in a vehicle isn't what the masses like. Not sure why some people don't seem to get that.

I've realized that for years.

The "answer" sells in such small numbers that it's not even 0.1% of the market. And most of those buyers are not getting it for the reasons the "answer" is popular here.

I think the other thing to remember, lots of "non-car people" buy their appliances by the name on the product. IF they've always had a Honda civic, that's what they buy. If it's a Matag washer, that is what they buy. Levis? yep. Etc. They aren't going out and finding the best product for their needs (look at all the ridiculous SUV's and monster trucks that litter the malls), they are buying the name.

IMO, there are better options in that segment than the civic, but they don't have the name and following the Honda does. Hell, Toyota still sells bajillions of corollas and Camry's and those things are about as terrible as anything in the market today.

Sure, only a small percentage of us want a performance Civic Hatch, but Honda already makes one. They just won't give it to us!

Just a note:

My original post was referencing an article that I can't find anymore basically saying that Honda was concerned over decreasing Civic sales in comparison to its other products.

Not that the Civic sucks, or that it isn't a good car, or they dont sell hundreds of thousands of them, I just thought maybe the slump in sales for the Civic was because they don't make them in hatch form, and the only way to get a hatch without getting an SUV is to go with a "compact" like the Fit, which some might argue is not in the same class as the Civic.

It could also be that as gas prices have stabilized and the economy has picked up, people are willing to take a hit on fuel efficiency for something larger like the CR-V.

That's true, but only if they have had a good experience with that product in the past. My opinion.

I think it is because the Civic ain't what it used to be. My parents have one (2010-2011, can't remember which) that they bought to replace a VW Beetle. They went with Honda because of its reputation for quality and because of the lack of the same in the Beetle. Although the Civic is the same size as the '86 Accord I owned years ago, it is noisy, uncomfortable and cheapish inside. My parents dislike it and regret buying it. My '86 Accord was a great car-- reliable, comfortable, it handled and rode well (remember double-wishbone suspension?) and the interior was amazingly good quality for a small car.
