Craigslist movers accused of stealing all of family's belongings

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. — A Douglas County, Georgia, family says movers they hired to haul their belongings to their new home vanished, taking all their possessions with them.

“I mean, we have lived in this house for over 10 years,” the homeowner explained. “We built a life here, memories. We have items that are irreplaceable on that truck.”

Douglas County deputies confirmed they are investigating the theft that happened Friday afternoon.

The homeowner said she hired the movers off Craigslist. After four hours of work, the movers climbed into their U-Haul truck and appeared to be heading to the family’s new home in another county. But along the way, the homeowner said the movers ditched her and vanished.

Douglas County investigators said Atlanta police recovered the U-Haul in a southwest Atlanta neighborhood a few hours later, but the truck was empty. And, investigators said, the truck itself had been stolen long before the movers showed up at the house.

“Ten years of memories, irreplaceable items, things that my husband and I worked hard for and earned. It’s just gone,” she said.

The homeowner estimates the thieves got away with approximately $75,000 worth of furniture, electronics and clothing.

Two days later, she said Cobb police called her saying one of her boxes had been recovered, the one with her most personal items inside.

“If I don’t get anything back, I want that box, because it has all of our social security, birth certificates in it. It has death records from my mom and son,” she said. “Of course, I had iPads and phones that were gone, but all the birth certificates, and all the records that I really needed were in that box, including my Bible, thank God.”

Deputies said their investigation into the crime is ongoing.

If that happened to me, the "movers" better pray to God the police get to them before I do.

Well is looks like the crooks had SOME ethics.

I'm beginning to wonder if there is anything good about CL any more.

BTW guess who was looking at moving services on CL the other day. But this was just to load and unload out of our vehicle.

Not a bad idea as crimes go, unfortunately most peoples' crap is just that. Crap.

Otherwise someone invites you to their home and hands everything over to you. Perfect crime!

yea, $75,000 of your stuff is like $2000 to other people.

When we moved, we always packed all the valuable stuff in our vehicle ourselves.

If you're hiring movers from craigslist, your stuff isn't worth $75,000. Maybe if you replaced all if it brand new... but even then I'm skeptical.

"...It’s just gone,” she said..."

If my parents ever move I wonder if I could find these guys and hire them to "move" some of the stuff that's filled up the basement

Odd, the thieves left probably the only box worth anything. Electronics, particularly Apple, are easily traceable and not even worth half retail value used, let alone stolen. But birth certificates, ssn, death certificates, those are high value items in the right (wrong) hands.

Was gonna hire help to move furniture from the downstairs to mostly empty upstairs appt. so I could clean and remodel the downstairs. I hate having strangers in the house anymore, they eyeball everything like they're at a berkeleying flea market or yard sale. Nice TV, n what's in the safe? Really... GTFO. Decided I'm gonna do the paint/ remodel half a room at a time if I have to. More work but no creepy, fishy eyeballers.

When I moved, I had my stereo, guitars, records, hockey equipment, and the fine china that my wife cares about all boxed up and moved by ME. Everything else I really don't care all that much about. The movers took care of that stuff. The same thing will be happening again.

Not to dump on the lady, but WHAT DID YOU BERKING EXPECT? There's a reason why professional movers are not cheap. Do the words "Licensed, Bonded, and Insured" mean nothing to you?

This.

I know moving is expensive, but that was a BAD judgement call.

So, then, there are desirable cars involved that we can't get locally?
